The ninjas were bad. Let's throw in an evil ninja horde to pit against the good samurai! The entire movie was a pretty contrived Hollywoodization of Meiji Japan, but that scene was the most blatant. I enjoyed the movie in its context, but still that scene made me cringe.

It's not exactly reset, as the number of universes they are dealing with are finite (seven, I think). They are trying to save one, some or all of those universes from being devoured by "the abyss." But there is a limit to the reset. Don't take this as any sort of justification for the quality...
