Small but annoying things D&D never got right

Yes, that's certainly one that D&D never got right. IMO, they should simplify encumbrance even more than they did in 3.x even at the expense of realism. Perhaps they could have "packages" of equipment so that if you have X type of armour + Y number of weapons + Z standard adventuring equipment...

Small but annoying things D&D never got right

I think it should be whichever is better for the attacker. I do European 15th c. martial arts. One of our regular warm-up exercises is simply to lightly slap your opponent, a touch attack in D&D terms. People who are stronger can bat their way through a weaker opponent's defence. But quicker...

Small but annoying things D&D never got right

Glad you agree! ;) Actually, we're not alone. Almost all gamers I've ever mentioned this to have agreed once I've brought it to their attention - one of those "yeah, why is that?" moments.

I'll second that. They're fixing the grappling rules in 4E so maybe they'll simplify the punching and kicking rules too, bring them into line with rules for weapons.

Small but annoying things D&D never got right

Oooh! That's a good one. I hadn't thought of that but now that you mention it, why can't you climb on a monster's back and stab away? ;)

Small but annoying things D&D never got right

What are the small but annoying things that D&D never got right in any edition - and should be fixed in 4E? I don't mean big questions such as Vancian magic vs non-Vancian; I mean details that D&D has always got wrong and that really bug you. Here's my pet peeve: Since 1E, Animate Object has...

D&D 4E Really?? Is RPGA really the best place to test 4e

We needn't speculate that RPGA members are far from ideal as playtesters; we already know it as a fact. There's a precedent: When 3.0 was being developed, it was playtested by RPGA members. They left in overly complex rules including those for AoOs, grappling and turning undead. All of these...

    Warlock confirmed in PH1...

A few posters have mentioned the druid as a possible PHB I class. I'm guessing/hoping that druids will be in the PHB II where they'll be joined by a more folkloric, i.e. nature-friendly, gnome race.

    Warlock confirmed in PH1...

FWIW I completely agree. Since 1E, I've felt that there should be a core class of arcane caster that derives its power from demonic pacts. I wouldn't mind a 4E class that resembled the 3.5 warlock in flavour but I wouldn't call it "warlock" and wouldn't include it in the PHB I. "Eldritch...

Gnomes - Where will they appear first?

I agree as long as 4E gnomes are closer to the gnomes of folklore and fantasy, not some largely new race as they were in 3E. That would be my guess as the most likely books where 4E gnomes will appear. ;)

    Can everyone duplicate threads now?

Thanks, Umbran. ;) I didn't know about the reporting function. I went back and used it. Hopefully, the two threads will now be merged. Thanks again, Z

    D&D 4E Reported post: The Ultimate PHBI4e Warforged Poll(3768561)

Original post: in Thread The Ultimate PHBI4e Warforged Poll Reason: This is essentially a duplication of my thread & poll on warforged. Soi-disant, it will be more "conclusive" but that sounds like a pretext. I believe this thread should be merged with mine. I posted on the Meta board about...

    Bizarre RPGs

A few years ago, I co-authored an RPG called Incarnate. The premiss was that the PCs had had past lives and could draw upon knowledge and skills from before they were born. It also meant that PCs and NPCs could know each other from their past lives which added a whole new level of complexity...

    Can everyone duplicate threads now?

Hello, Mods, On the 4E board, we're told not to duplicate existing threads. And quite right too! Along comes Kae'Yoss and essentially duplicates my thread & poll about warforged with his. Soi-disant, his will be more "conclusive" than mine but it looks amazingly like duplication to me. Imagine...

Lego to release dwarves, orcs and ogre

Again, not so! :p Check out BrickLink, a great site that allows you to buy (and sell) individual Lego parts, mostly for modest prices. I've used BrickLink quite a lot and have only had good experiences with the sellers there. Hope that helps. ;)

Lego to release dwarves, orcs and ogre

Not so! ;) For some years, Lego have done two leg lengths: standard and short. This pic shows the difference. The elf in the centre has standard legs while the dwarf and gnome either side of him have short legs (NB this isn't one of the official dwarves; it's MOC). The standard legs are...

Warforged: Like them or loathe them?

Please see this post for a counter to that argument.

Lego to release dwarves, orcs and ogre

FYI Lego have done a whole bunch of creatures over the years that also appear in D&D, e.g. vampires, ghosts, mummies, earth elementals, animated scarecrows, flesh golems, griffins and yetis. Their current ranges include skeletons, death knights, dragons and various sea monsters. :)

    I hope that's true! ;)

Warforged: Like them or loathe them?

The original golems of Jewish folklore were mindless constructs made of clay. Warforged are sentient and usually metal. If I had to describe warforged to someone who knew something of SF, fantasy and folklore in general but nothing of D&D specifically, I would say they were magically animated...
