    D&D 5E (2014) Planar Binding

That's correct in the RAW, but Sage Advice has opined that Conjure Elemental does work with Planar Binding: http://www.sageadvice.eu/2015/10/14/does-planar-binding-work-with-conjure-elemental/ . If your DM doesn't follow that guidance, it's probably time to find a new campaign.

Monsters and Heroes of the Realms: a Dungeons & Dragons Coloring Book

I could be mistaken but I believe this is the only official D&D book ever published in both English and American. Most have been in American with a few in English, e.g. the 1E Fiend Folio. I don't think we've ever had both before.

    Who Was D&D Meant For?

My research suggests that in its early days D&D was aimed at a male audience. Rightly or wrongly and despite Elise Gygax's contribution to the game, Gary thought that gaming was mostly a male hobby. Specifically, he said: "[as] a biological determinant, I think men think differently than women...

D&D 5E (2014) Earth elemental grappling and burying alive questions

Thanks, both. It's a shame it doesn't work. My wizard can now conjure and bind elementals and I was hoping it could drag enemies away and kill them that way. But I accept Sage Advice rulings when I DM and expect my DM who was formerly one of my players will too.

D&D 5E (2014) Earth elemental grappling and burying alive questions

Here's a series of related 5e questions that I would very much like answered. I tried to find answers on the board but didn't find what I was looking for. Apologies if I'm posting this in the wrong place... An earth elemental successfully grapples a PC/NPC or monster on its turn. The...

RPG Evolution: Will LEGO Ever Replace Miniatures?

There was a LEGO D&D game at Dragonmeet last December. The DM had prepared a vast LEGO terrain covering a large gaming table. My regular D&D was nearby and though lots of fun, I would have liked to have joined the LEGO one! I don't think I'm alone in thinking that: the DM of that game won a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Square grid, what's the difference between a square and a circle?

In the 5e campaign I'm currently in, we have rotating DMs of which I'm one. One of the other DMs agrees with you. He gives creatures in the 5' strip around spell areas a 50% chance of being affected by it which makes it much harder for spellcasters to attack enemies and avoid allies (unless...

    D&D 5E (2014) Square grid, what's the difference between a square and a circle?

Areas of effect are centred on the intersection of squares, not on entire squares in 5e per the DMG, p.251. So a circle (or sphere) of radius r is a square (or cube) of side length 2r. A fireball, for example, is 8 squares across.

Help Game Designer Jim Ward With Medical Costs

Donated. I don't have much money right now but I'm happy to help a doyen of the D&D community.

    D&D 5E (2014) Help with Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound

Interesting. The spell is a conjuration, not an illusion, and therefore possibly substantive. That may explain why it can only be cast in an unoccupied space. I imagine that the hound has a physical presence and that other creatures can't move through the hound's space. If that's right, its size...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help with Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound

Thanks, mach1.9pants. From memory, no. It's always been a fixed location. I don't think so. If, for example, you could only be hit by magic weapons, the hound wouldn't be able to bite you. One more question: 5. Could a wizard cast this spell through a glass window? In other words, if the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help with Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound

I have some questions about Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound and welcome the thoughts of fellow EN Worlders. My questions come from a player's and DM's perspective. 1. Is the hound size S or size M? I'm thinking that anything that can do that much damage with its bite is probably size M. What do...

Note to WotC: They're not TRPGs. They're just RPGs.

I don't visit the WotC site that often so only just noticed they've started calling D&D a "TRPG". The 'T' for "tabletop" is superfluous. D&D is an RPG. No specification is required. Any related class of game such as so-called computer RPGs or live action RPGs, CRPGs and LARPs respectively...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

I've already acknowledged that D&D is set in fantasy realms where anything is possible, so you're not adding anything to the discussion. If we don't liken fantasy settings to the real world except where required, those fantasy worlds become impossible to engage with. If we start to say that...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

D&D takes place in fantasy settings, so anything is possible. But if we use the real world as a guide to how languages are most likely learnt, then you would expect them to be picked up either through interacting with the people around you growing up or formally in primary and secondary school...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

No, it isn't. I often disagree with him, but not this time. You would have to explain how and why during your life before becoming a wizard, you chose to learn a language which hardly anyone else on your plane speaks instead of learning one that lots of creatures speak just in case, at some...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

Communication. Either your DM is incredibly generous and lets you learn exotic languages (mine doesn't as part of character creation) or you have to cast tongues for each elemental. Of course, if you just want the elementals to be friendly towards you and defend themselves when attacked, you...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

Nor does the wizard. Oh sure, they're on the wizard's spell list but you either have to have a very generous DM (I don't) or you have to use up an additional 3rd level spell slot and an action for each elemental you summon. Summoning elementals just isn't practical for most wizards in 5e.

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

You can create the headband at 3rd, so you gain the benefit for at least a level. As you're not powerful at that level anyway, every little bonus helps. Also, if for flavour reasons you have chosen a race not normally associated with wizardry, i.e. one that doesn't confer an Int bonus, your Int...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

My PC is a 6th level evoker. Another character in the party is a 5th level sorcerer. The game tends to be fairly combat intensive and his sorcerer makes my wizard look pretty pathetic. I really can't blame your players for choosing not to play the wizard dump class. I'm not helped by the fact...
