[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

Daztur, Thank you again for your wonderful analysis. I think it goes a long way to getting to the core of the difference between play styles. I guess the $64,000 question then becomes.... Do you think a single system can cater to both CaW and CaS play styles? I do not believe that both play...

    D&D 5E (2014) Another Critical Hits 5E Report

If I recall correctly, the minotaur was in the cave with the stirges. I also vaguely recall that there were more than one ogre in the area. May have been two.

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

Daztur, Thank you so very much for putting into words the feeling that I had but have struggled to express for a long time. Your analysis of Combat as War cuts to the very core of why I like short combats. Your description of the bees encounter was so cool! I wish I could play with you guys.

    D&D 5E (2014) Another Critical Hits 5E Report

I'm a 1e guy and this sounds even better. I'm very anxiously awaiting the open playtest.

D&D 5E (2014) How quickly should ability scores increase in 5e?

I prefer a modest increase, if any. I would do something like the 1e Unearthed Arcana rules for cavaliers but make it universal. Every character starts with a stat and a percentile die roll. Every level, roll 2d10 and add to the percentile. Cap it at racial maximum.

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

Sacrifice to the elder dice gods. probably.

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

Thanks for the great feedback! Quick question... you said you liked this the best of all the editions you've played. Previously, what was your favorite edition?

Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

I've done something similar. Everyone rolls a set and then each person can choose a set of rolls from whatever was rolled. If everyone chooses the same set. so be it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Item Creation in 5E

In 1e, items enchanted needed a permanancy spell cast upon it. Doing so generated a 5% change of a permanent loss of 1 point of CON to the caster.

What is the typical party size in practice?

Throughout the various editions, I've played in sessions which had anywhere from 1 to 25 players. (The 25 was at a convention with two opposing teams going through a dungeon). I am hoping the new edition can accomodate any number of players.

D&D 5E (2014) Can 5E bring the wonder and mystery back to Magic Items?

I don't know if they still do it in the newer editions, but I LOVED how Earthdawn handled magic items when that game first came out. EVERY magic item needed to be researched and properties unlocked. Characters had to weave their threads (personal energy) and bond with the threads of the item...

Human Heroic Effort versus Elven Accuracy

If you include feat support, the elf is much better off in trying to turn a miss into a hit. Both the +2 and +d4 stack, I believe... and if you want to go real crazy and burn feats on it, there's a 3rd feat which allows 2 rolls instead of one. I've used the third one... and I have turned...

Is the Redbox Rogue All Cocked Up?

I read through it very quickly last night and what struck me was that I don't recall seeing a striker mechanic for the rogue in the solo adventure. Maybe it didn't come up because he was battling a minion, but I don't remember a reference to sneak attack or combat advantage. Did I just miss...

    Do you like character building?

Thanks for the question! I've actually been thinking about this a lot lately and I think my answer is also going to be "no". I guess I'm a grognard but I remember when we referred to characters as "characters" and not "builds". They evolved as the story did. I really do enjoy playing 4e and...

    Half Celestial Skill Points

I was looking at a summarized version of the Half Celestial template (on Crystalkeep.com) and it made reference to the base skill points changing. "Base skill points are now (8+int mod) * (racial HD + 3)" Exactly what does this mean? If a creature with 4 racial HD had an int modifier of +3...

Do Saving Throws for Creatures Increase?

Does this mean that magical beasts have saving throws as a similar level fighter, for example? Are the saving throws modified by the appropriate stat modifiers? Also, do they pick up feats similar to characters? i.e. at 1st level and again at every level divisible by 3?
