Stunting and the Bag of Flour Connundrum

Page 42 of the DMG gives some fairly good guidelines for adjudicating stunts. The key is not to provide benefits for repeatable stunts that are out of line with at-will powers. I certainly wouldn't allow a bag of flour to blind someone. It's far too powerful an effect. However, it may...

    Multiclassing into Barbarian

I was actually considering it for a ranger PC. The PC is mostly striker, but has taken feats to gain plate armor so he can be a bit tanky when needed. The +2 damage for 1 encounter per day seems rather nice, and I was looking into other powers/abilities from barb that might also be synergistic.

How to "capture" players using 4E rules?

I strenuously agree. Let the players know that you'd like to have the PCs captured to further the story. Knowing that, most good players will be okay with it.

    Multiclassing into Barbarian

Rage feels kinda class feature-y, and it certainly was in previous editions, so I thought it best to verify it, rather than assume. :)

How to prevent the PC's from succeeding without seeming cheap

I suggest reworking the encounter so that the PCs are: a) able to positively effect the event b) able to make choices that have real impact on the event c) working towards a potential success, not a guaranteed failure. In this scenario, make it 3 liches, instead of 1. When the PCs arrive on...

    Multiclassing into Barbarian

If a PC multiclasses into Barbarian and then pays to swap one of their powers for a barbarian power with the Rage keyword, do they gain the benefits of the barbarian rage granted by the power?

clarification on a few rules for new 4.0 players

There's no facing. Both flanking characters recieve the +2. They'd charge at +10 speed. :p

    Question about the Character Builder.

Thanks, Seraph. Originally I did increase the damage on the weapon, which worked perfectly to model a large-weapon while still allowing the character builder to function. My problem arose when I tried to level up the character and give him Weapon Expertise. The character (large-sized) wields...

    Question about the Character Builder.

My problem would also be solved if I could give the character an extra feat...? :.-( Edit: Nevermind, found the add-a-feat houserule option. :p This character builder is awesome. :)

    Question about the Character Builder.

Heyo folks, So, after trying the demo, I am in love with the Wizards character builder, and have just slapped down the 8 bucks to play with the full version. So far I'm loving it every bit as much as I thought I would. However, I'm having a bit of trouble with the house rule features. I'm...

When is metagaming too much as a DM?

Yes, I'd consider it too metagamey for the Balor to target the wizard because he has fewer hit points. "Hit Points" is a metagame term, and Balors don't think that way. Instead, I recommend you decide the Balor's actions based on in-game logic. In 3.x, at 17th-level it's generally a good idea...

Magic Items that lost their magic

I'm not positive, but are you limiting your model to a standard medieval society? I haven't participated in an epic-level D&D game thus-far, but of those I've read about, you tend to expand beyond the base society at those levels. A noble or even a king may not be able to spend 3 million gold...

    Metallic Dragons: Unaligned!?

Thanks for the link! I'm a sucker for angelic lore. I will say that one section of the article had me dying of laughter. While discussing the angel Metatron: :p

    Bait & Switch

My sentiments exactly. Since the mutated player was okay with it, it looks like the DM is doing okay so far. ;)

Magic Items that lost their magic

This is exactly what I already do. But there's something for a magic item actually being potent as well as cool. ;)

DM tips - what makes a good DM?

This bears repeating. Some gamers prefer a Beer and Pretzels game over in-depth storytelling. Nothing destroys a game faster than players and DM being on different pages on the subject. Aside from that, I think the only advice I'd give is to not become too attached to any grand storylines you...

    Hubris 4e

A foe that cannot be defeated is not a combat encounter. It's an RP encounter or plot device. Presenting a non-defeatable foe as a combat encounter only serves to frustrate the players. I give the players an out-of-character heads up when they're facing a foe they cannot possibly defeat. "As...

Magic Items that lost their magic

I understand how you feel. Usually I'm not bothered by the phenomenon. After all, even Thor had a magic belt of strength. Sometimes the item is part of the legend. My only real quibble with the whole thing is that if you want to play a character who's hygienic, he can lose half his powers by...

What Is Roleplaying, And How Should It Be Encouraged?

I mostly disagree with your entire concept of role-playing. For me, role-playing is best defined (loosely) as "bringing your character to life in the minds of the other characters." This can be accomplished in many ways. It can be a particular voice. It can be a particular character...

Are meleerers unfairly penalized at high levels?

This serves to add to the tactical challenge of certain fights. Sometimes one PC will need to withdraw, while another might need to move forward and take their place. Just because one is a melee-focused striker doesn't necessarily guarantee they'll always be able to melee for 100% of a combat...
