What are the good multiclass options for a ranger?

It's an automaton. Originally the idea was that the stats would be split between the robot and the boy. Then the beastmaster came along and it just stuck, since machines don't really have force of personality, or willpower. :p I've reworked the powers that require wisdom to either use...

What are the good multiclass options for a ranger?

As close as possible, while tweaking things occasionally when they don't fit. Beastmaster Ranger seemed the closest mechanical fit to the concept I wanted, so we're sort of shoehorning it in. The boy does have mental stats. And if the boy is dominated/stunned/etc. then he can't give directions...

Modeling the Duel as a Skill Challenge

These duals are basically until "check-mate," i.e. until one side yields. So beyond first blood, but not to the death. The opposing duelist will be attacking the PC duelist every round. Thus there are actually two ways to lose the duel, being reduced to 0 hp, or accumulating failures. That...

    I still don't understand Controllers

As I understand it, with regards to 4e, a controller is a character that specializes in disabling foes. In a way, it'd be an "anti-leader" as you suggest, insofar as leaders specialize in enabling allies.

    The redefinition of feats.

I agree. I actually find that 4e powers are most akin to 3.x Vancian spellcasting. Each has a set number of uses, with a set effect. We've abandoned Vancian magic in concept, but not really in design. :p This is it exactly, for me.

Modeling the Duel as a Skill Challenge

I'm considering starting up a campaign soon in which I'd like duels between individual warriors to play a significant roll. Having kept up with the running commentary on PCat's game, I am now thinking perhaps a skill challenge might be a fun way to run duels, so that the other members of the...

    The redefinition of feats.

Of course! ;) I just happen to fall definitively on the other side of the fence on this one. I tend to already have more cool character concepts than I can shake a stick at. I buy books because I want a specific slew of options, and am very unhappy with that book providing only a small...

What are the good multiclass options for a ranger?

:uhoh: ...is there some sort of trademark issue I should be aware of? Or is IK just not that popular anymore? :p Strength is actually my highest stat. His race is (mechanically anyway) human, with the boost put into Strength. He's all about melee. He also, as a machine, has no mental stats...

What are the good multiclass options for a ranger?

Heyo folks. A bit of background on my character: Fundamentally, he's a ranger in a 4e game, set in the Iron Kingdoms. The concept is a bit unusual. I wanted to play a young boy in control of a steam jack. After a lot of wrangling, I decided to model it by using a beastmaster ranger. The...

    The redefinition of feats.

Much as I enjoy 4e, I'm not sure I like this thing that is the new feat. However, reading through the replies, I think a large part of it is the organization of the new feats. If I buy a book called "Martial Power" then I want the vast majority of the feats within to be useful to as many...

    Perception checks

I tend to tackle the issue from a different angle. I design the dungeon based on why it was built and by whom, and perhaps what their resources were. Some secrets they'll automatically find. Others they'll need to actively search for. I'd say some they'll never find, but in reality I rarely...

    The redefinition of feats.

This is another thing about the new "feats" that adds to my feeling about them morphing into class abilities. Multiclassing into another class via feat is supposed to grant you access to feats which require that class, no? Yet almost all of the feats for a class also require a class ability...

    The redefinition of feats.

I think you may be missing my point. I agree with your above statement. However, even if you are a martial class, you're unlikely to find more than a handful of feats in Martial Power that you even qualify for. Let alone actually like. Each feat doesn't just require you to be a martial...

    The redefinition of feats.

I'm not usually one to criticise the designers. I continue to play 4e, so I'm happy with the game as a whole, and find no reason to really get worked up over those parts which may not be perfect. That said, if what you say is true, it strikes me as merely a means to cut corners. "We don't...

    The redefinition of feats.

I play 4e exclusively these days. I played 3.x for several years, 1st-level to 20th. The following thread isn't meant as an attack of either edition, but rather a discussion of the evolution of a game mechanic, namely, the feat, and the positive/negative aspects of such. Recently I was...

    The Warlock's Curse

As it stands, the only benefit to cursing multiple targets is that your ability to gain temporary hit points is expanded across multiple targets. Sadly, since temporary hit points don't stack...not a particularly great benefit. :(

Why do dragons do so little damage?

This is an interesting thread. I used a low-level black dragon in a game of mine recently, and found the critter to be quite deadly. It's cloud of darkness really hurt the party's offense, and he managed to get a few breath weapon recharges that really put a hurting on the party. Then again...

    I like 4e, but I miss... Forked Thread: I like 3E, but I miss...

I like 4e but I miss... ...character classes with different playstyles. Used to be you could swap character classes and the feel of the game would change dramatically. Now the homogenization means it's harder to shake things up by swapping characters. Not impossible, just harder. There are...

Will WotC ever get it right?

I'm not seeing your logic here. Let's take your theoretical example. The best AoE is 25th, the best single target is 21st, and the best penalty is 29th. How does this present any sort of false choice? At 21st, you pick up the best single-target. If you're focused on single-target damaging...
