I suspect that the spell in Complete Divine was simply a copy/paste from the Book of Vile Darkness, a 3.0 book. At the time, Bestow Curse was a Transmutation, so the greater version was similarly schooled. The spell(s) changed over to be Necromancy with the 3.5 switch, whence the confusion arises.

It's possible that the 3.0 version of the spell is being used, which did allow for a hemispherical configuration. IIRC, that version of the spell allowed no save, See Invisibility or no.

I picked up the Rules Compendium for about the same price, and am fairly pleased with it. There are a few pages that I've noticed to print poorly, but on the whole I'm pleased.
