I do the same as Staffan -- always done it that way, and sheets have been lost and/or forgotten -so many- times that it became pointless to let the players hang on to the sheets. We'd never get to play any D&D that way :p

Oh, it's okay. The gnomes weren't too important, they were just there. The PCs were looking for something that was in gnome country, so hey. Gnomes. Farming their mushrooms, singing their songs, all that razzamatazz. No caps, though, saddened the masses.

Good old gnomes. Party met gnomes for the first time in the last two game sessions, kept asking 'em where their red caps were. Poor gnomes.
