D&D General How often do your sessions end mid-combat?

I like to end on something important, like the start of a battle or big revelation. The next game can then start with excitement and a high level of interest to build from. Ending mid-combat is rarely a good idea.

D&D 5E (2014) Awakened Spell and effects on offspring of awakened creatures

In Starfinder, which is the future universe of Pathfinder, which uses the 3.5 D&D rules with some twists here and there, there is an entire race of awakened animals now called Uplifted. Obviously this doesn't mean a DM must go with that, but it is an near cannon an answer as we are likely to get...

    D&D 5E (2014) Neophyte DM - Spellcaster Question

As has already been touched on, Wizard's spellbooks are more versatile because of the large number of spells they can learn, and the scope of those spells. To elaborate on that some more, there are really 2 things that make it powerful. 1st: Wizards are not bound by gods, alignment, or idiom...

D&D General Kobayashi Maru: Should the fate of the character always be in the player's hands? POLL

I don't think fair has anything to do with it. D&D is not a game of chance, not gambling. Sure we use randomizers, but that is to add some variability to action resolution, not to make it a gamble in the true sense. In a cooperative narrative, suddenly having your story come to an abrupt end for...

    D&D 3.x Homebrew Classes

Unfortunately I do not know of one. I am honestly surprised there are homebrew classes for 3.5, given the volume of material from 1st and 3rd party publishers. I swear there seems to be at least 5 versions of every possible class lol.

    D&D General On Grognardism...

A couple of things. First, my statement had a comma in it that you missed (DM power trips, forced homebrew worlds). Second, the key word you seem to have missed in my comment on homebrew is the word forced. I think you also missed the part where I said there is nothing wrong with homebrew, etc...

    D&D General On Grognardism...

I think this post is really what I see when people discuss old vs. new D&D (or perhaps RPGs in general). It isn't that the game has changed. All of the things this poster describes can still be electively engaged in. The difference is that now people need to choose this course, where previously...

    D&D 5E (2014) Using COMMAND to break a caster's concentration?

I agree that neither sleep nor command are from a school of magic that can endow a person with the ability to, say, fly. But, both are enchantment spells that compel the target, so I would argue that both operate the same way. That being the case it makes perfect sense that if one can compel a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Using COMMAND to break a caster's concentration?

I would argue that since both sleep and command are magic, and since both are the same school of magic, then both should be capable of causing the sleep state, even if it just for 1 turn in the case of command.

How to Tell if Your Fun is Wrong

My opinion is that no conception is unexplorable in fiction or art. Just because you explore a subject that violates cultural norms, religious dogma, etc., that doesn't make it wrong in my opinion. What makes it wrong is if it is causing harm to another without their consent. Play a game with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Using COMMAND to break a caster's concentration?

The antonym for concentrate is deconcentrate. It is a single word that can be used with command. From Concentration (PHB), "You can end concentration at any time (no action required)." From Command (PHB), "You speak a one-word command to a creature you can see within range. The target must...

D&D 5E (2014) Cantrip nerf (house rule brainstorm)

So casters can attack each round just like any other class, and that's bad? The whole point is not to have A: Let the Wizard rest, or B: I'll just be setting here the next hour or so while you guys play, scenarios. A caster casting is no different than an arrow or sword swing in this regard.

D&D 5E (2014) Volo's Guide to Monsters Limited edition for $500+ on ebay?!

Anything with limited quantity that appeals to a popular culture will likely sell well.

    D&D 5E (2014) Professions in 5e

It seems topics like this are prone to becoming traps. The TC was technically asking about professions, and used Soldier as an example. The answer to his question is they are now handled by Backgrounds such as Soldier or Baldur's Gate Soldier. The problem is, and the reason why a one post answer...

    D&D 5E (2014) Holy Ham Hocks, Batman!!!

What you are seeing is people selling the exclusive retail cover versions. The normal cover versions are below retail on most E-Bay listings, but I would usually recommend just getting them on Amazon or at a local store.

D&D General GM : Spellcaster Arms Race

My simple answer to the TCs question is, as often as is needed to keep the game fun for the players. The rules are there to provide a sense of stability, the physics if you will, of the game world. Like the real world they need to trust that in general they can run or jump and so forth as...

D&D General Let's Talk About How to "Fix" D&D

That opinion always confuses me. It is a Fantasy setting after all.

Worlds of Design: What Defines a RPG?

I would agree but I would also extend your statement by saying that we are discussing multilinear evolution over progress. In other words, characters should change over time in relation to their story arcs but that change could be a progression or a regression. This is also very subjective!

    D&D 5E (2014) Abusing Tasha's racial proficiency swaps

I would argue that an RPG isn't JUST characters playing a role in a story, but also players playing those characters. As such, a player may have their reasons for why they want their character to have x/y/z. It can be problematic when the DM makes assumptions about a players motives.
