Italy here. I play regularly with a couple groups of long-term friends.
@ Jacen: since Europe includes western Russia (the Urals being the eastern bound), Finland is part of continental Europe as well. You can't escape... ;)
Well, it's pretty plain for anybody who read Into the icy darkness with any amount of attention; in fact I have been wondering about it since this story hour started.
Consider, however, that one-hit-kills are the exception, not the rule; against enemies with more than a couple of HDs, you need to hit them at least two or even three times before the penalties become relevant; forget the spell level: for the level-independent benefit of fell drain you are...
Miniatures Handbook p. 25
Complete Arcane doesn't mention it AFAIK, however, while it makes them applicable to spell-like abilities; until the errata for CA is out, we can wonder whether it's an omission or it's an intentional change. :\
It isn't so bad; color spray allows a saving throw, true, but it doesn't require a touch attack and hits an area: target a group of 4~5 enemies and chances are that at least a couple is out of the picture; all for a slot one level lower than a fell drain ray of frost. Plus, the latter would be...
You must be at least a third level character, however; for the same level, a single unmodified scorching ray will do the same against almost any 1st level target, without you having to invest in a feat; and for a 1st level slot color spray is much more of an encounter killer anyway.
From Oriental Adventures:
Blade dancer (p. 38): probably too high end, as it requires 9th level, at least some ability to cast spells and bab +7, but it allows wire-fu ass-kicking. Just swap 'swords' with 'warfans'.
Ninja Spy (p. 43): poison and lots of odd abilities, plus she probably already...
:uhoh: Just a trifle, huh?
Not to mention that the dagger is now accessible to the one man who could rightfully yoink the title of Emperor for himself; things are getting interesting indeed.
BTW, did you just wing Gao Yun's demise or did you use specific rules?
Apart from the fact that as others already said Frostburn is more a collection of cold-themed elements than the Complete Book of Cold Places, you are struck in a big false premise: that people worship what they like over what they fear (or that worship is triggered only by awe and respect and...
More musings...
Some additional thoughts.
If the previous civilization had enough forewarning of the disaster, they may have set up self-sufficient communities in sheltered locales tasked with maintaining their culture and science. Provided they endured the ensuing ages, their relationship...
Likely, it doesn't. If the population is decimated to such an extent, societies and cultures crumble.
Assuming that destruction was spread all over, population density drops and people band together into small groups, extended families and tribes; here and there there could be a few surviving...
No problem.
Of course, it would be nice if we had distinct words instead of level this and level that, but the supposed benefit isn't worth the trouble to learn a new nomenclature, at least for me and my friends.
