When creating adventures, do you "fudge" the rules?

Do I bend the rules, yes sometimes. But only in certain ways, like there being a rare event happening in the back plot that there are no rules for. (for example a massacre at the site of another massacre causing a very short lived temporary portal to the negative energy plane to open from all...

    Let's play CALVINBALL!!

I think that death at -con would work better then -(10+HD). No not better make that quite differently. The former would give higher survivability mostly to fighter types at low levels, but stays fairly even as the game progesses. The latter would have little impact at low levels but a high...

How do you run an effective horror campaign?

A tip that I've heard in several places (such as certain roleplaying tips issues) is that fear of the unknown is greater then the fear of the known. So the longer you can hold off revealing what the mysterious enemy is just giving clues, and victims the more the fear should build. In fact go to...

My PCs are in a swamp. Now what?

Maybe the party gets lost in the swamp and has to talk to the natives to find the way back. I don't think their are to many landmarks in a swamp after all. But with 12 level pc's its easy for them to stay on track with the proper precautions, and even easier if theirs a ranger of a druid. Hmm...

How Often Does Your Group Level?

Between alternating campaigns and scheduling problems the real world time between levels varies a lot. But in sessions I'd say about every 5 sessions of one campaign.

How do YOU play a bard?

I've never played a bard, but a bard has been part of the group I've been in for a long time. The things I've noticed is that the player of the bard enjoys roleplaying more then combat and that is a trait that I would guess would be good in a player who wants to play a bard. The bard was...

Balance... does it really matter that much to you?

Balance is important to a degree. That degree varies from group to group but there is a degree for every group where some type of balance matters. An extreme example is a killer dm that doesn't balance encounters at all and each encounter is enough to kill the party three times over. Unless you...

Making player skill choices feel useful

Hmm, heres a few ideas. Balance: What season is it. If its winter, a battle may occur in an area covered with patches of ice. Or maybe some oil is spilled as part of an ambush. Handle Animal: The pc is traveling on a horse or with someone who's on a horse and something spooks the horse. The...

How would you introduce a new plot thread?

Can't give any straight answer because it depends on the group, and the situation. For the example above, I'd only have the duke personally ask the players if they were well know, or this was happening in the middle of nowhere and the players were the only ones that could help. If neither of...

Starter Packs for Harbringer Series Better Buy than Booster Packs?

The answer is very simple. With two boosters you get 2 rares, 6 uncommons, and 8 commons. With 1 booster pack you get 1 rare, 5 uncommons, and 10 commons. So unless your are trying to full your common collection the booster packs are a better buy.

Placing pre-written adventures in your world

Even though I dm a homebrew I have somewhat of a problem placing pre-written adventures in. My homebrew is a vast archipelago and the problem comes when a module requires a vast overland trek (as there aren't any islands that take 2 weeks to journey across without ever seeing the sea), or a...

    Ramifications of a land world?

Have to agree with several other posters. Don't worry about science from the real world. When mages can cause people to drop dead with a single word, clerics can draw power from gods, druids can wildshape into animals, real science is already thrown out the window. So using it is mostly...

The flip side of the insta-kill discussion... What good are mooks?

This is in a nutshell the real purpose of mooks at higher level. These are those enemys the party can show off on, do intresting manuevers that would be to risky in a tough battle, and basicly get a chance to show off their power. The chance to feel like the power the party has earned is worth...

    Great Moments in YOUR game...

Best moment in a game I've played in. Well the party of 5 level 1 characters was confronting the level 6 leader and only member of a cult. Due to some amazing roles on my part as the halfing rouge I got into postion while the ranger in the party stalled the cult leader by asking questions about...

    Average Number of Encounters/Level

As merric said its 13.33. A few notes on this average. It is based on a party of 4 characters all the same level fighting battles of the same el: as the average party level. When you throw in weaker encounters, and stronger ones sometimes it balances out and sometimes the real amount of...

How did you find EN World?

My my, I found it after 3 edition was releashed but when it was Eric Noah's Unofficial D&D 3rd Edition News. When I found it it just seemed to be a nice little site I checked every now and then, and it wasn't important enougth back then to me for me to remember how I found it although I'm...

Need some advice on spells from the miniatures handbook

One good rule for allowing any new material, is that you as the dm won't go looking for loopholes and abuses of the rules, but if the players start to do that then all gloves are off. I've mainly seen this rule used for certain spells, like if you don't Buff, scry and teleport on the villians...

Need some advice on spells from the miniatures handbook

I'll be very wary of most of them. I'd ban snakes swiftness outright, it just operates outside of normal D&D rules, and I can't think of any core rule that allows you to act outside your iniative. Bigbys Slapping Hand, I'll ban as well, as concentration is a skill that most fighting types don't...

    The Ninja Core Class

IIRC do note that they have the power to go invisible for 1 round by using their ki pool (which is limited to a number of times per day) starting at second level. This should balance out the sudden strike with sneak attack as sudden strike can be used in situations sneak attack can't with this...
