    How Expensive is Too Expensive?

Why yes, exactly like the $100 pdf that is now available. And you know, the almost inevitable Humble Bundle release in a few years.

    How Expensive is Too Expensive?

There's some truth here. A unique aspect of RPGs is most of the spending is done by DMs; who also spend huge amounts of time outside of the game working on sessions. So premium products get premium sighs from DMs who already feel a little underappreciated. I'm sure there's no correlation to...

    How Expensive is Too Expensive?

I like deluxe editions and have bought many "deluxe" options (Geekchic, Wyrmwood, Elder Wood...) I don't quite see buying an entire RPG as a "deluxe" only option. This is something I have to convince people to play, and convince them to play multiple times. When I spring for Gloomhaven I know...

TSR When TSR Passed On Tolkien

Speaking as someone who is playing Adventures in Middle Earth (AIME) right now, I don't see it competing with more open ended systems/worlds. The great part of AIME is taking a deep dive into Tolkien atmosphere which requires a lot of buy in from the DM and players. Not particularly easy (or...

D&D General Vote For Your Favourite D&D Villain

So hard to decide. Lady Vol in really interesting, Orcus is so classic (and the last one I used personally), and Tiamat... Tiamat is ALL the DRAGON.

Lizardfolk: New Ancestry from Lost Omens Character Guide

I can't help but love that they get to hold their breath extra long. Big bonus if they sneeze salt if they live near the ocean.

    D&D 5E (2014) Best and worst of 5E

Favorite: PHB It is so rich, so essential, so wonderfully illustrated and evocative. Turned people right around from 4E (many haters and lovers) Least favorite: PHB The index is maddening in such a crucial book. It is the rotten pickle that ruins the soup for me. Runner up - Horde of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) NewbieDM Posts Avernus Previews

A rather old story. Diablo is all about (like Avernus and many many past stories) corruption and temptation.

Worlds of Design: Gun vs. Sword

This gets to flavoring HP. Players always like the think of HP as literal "health" like the Doom guy's picture getting wounded as it runs out. Then you use bandages, and hey presto, no more bleeding wounds! I'm with Morrus, I much prefer the 5E style of HP as "stamina" where you are running...

Worlds of Design: Gun vs. Sword

The design of combat space is pretty different and tends towards larger environments the more "modern" or "sci-fi" gear is available. I think it is worth mentioning that designing dungeons that players find "fun" and motivating is pretty easy. See the anti-fortress discussion of Celebrim...

    D&D 5E (2014) NewbieDM Posts Avernus Previews

The lair mechanics bridge some of this. I had a lot of success using powers built and balanced against lair mechanics but flavoring it like you describe. I capstoned my three year campaign with an Orcus fight that left the players pretty stunned. Even just changing the battlefield without...

    D&D 5E (2014) NewbieDM Posts Avernus Previews

Color me intrigued. The stain glass account of Zariel's fall is just such a wonderful detail. Incredibly atmospheric. I've avoided the whole heaven/hell motif for years but now I'm being... tempted =)

Worlds of Design: Gun vs. Sword

Was hoping for some reference to the silly business in Warhammer 40k. My son keeps flipping through Visions of Heresy (the art book) and demanding "what's the point of all of these swords and axes?" On a similar note, most games sidestep the incredible power of military formations, especially...

D&D 5E (2014) New Eberron Book Details From WotC

Keith kept writing about Eberron on his blog, really high quality stuff like the these articles. Would be great to get that all together with them.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Philosophy of System Mastery

I've played enough systems that lean both ways to realize that I much, much prefer 5E's approach. I burned out hard on Pathfinder when I had one powergaming player when the rest of the (very experienced and capable) players decided to make weird characters to have fun. As a DM I had to spend...

Breaking out of the "paladin trap."

I've always seen Cleric and Paladins as being personally loyal to gods, but motivated by a sense of shared mission (the mission could be saving lives, revenge, etc.). The divine element is a source of power, but the power is granted to achieve an agenda.

D&D 5E (2014) New Eberron Book Details From WotC

From the description I'd be excited to meld the mechanics from Acquisitions Incorporated (or Strongholds & Followers) with a party based around a marked House. Some of the House shenanigans always always had a corporate skulduggery feeling. Now.. with mechanics attached!

D&D General Ed Greenwood: A World of a Thousand-Thousand Stories

It is really cool to always be a Google (or index lookup) away from the left turn the party made in your right-turn plans. The number of ways Forgotten Realms have turned left during the years with different authors also gives an incredible wealth of plot hooks, approaches, and themes to...

Pathfinder 2E Here's the Cover Art for Pathfinder 2E's April Bestiary 2

The more I look at this picture, the more I think they're posing for a vacation photo. "Hey everybody, we made it to the Caverns of Ut'Utkalakalala'lath! Hey, can you take a picture for us?"

Still waiting for a modern take like Temple of Elemental Evil... but playable. Sooo many bugs. Promising!
