Exactly! Pathfinder did that. It made sense, cantrips at will don't really unbalance anything (save for a few, like the ones you mentioned), plus it does really fit the whole wizard/sorcerer vibe.

Do you have a link to somewhere where I might find more information on this? A new modern system intrigues me since Wizards seems to steadfastly ignore the fact they ever made d20 modern. (come on 5e modern!) A change up of systems would be good. As I swear, if we change back to playing Rifts...

This is what I'm thinking along the lines of as well. Remember Ray of Frost? Maybe something like that, just a little more powerful or what have you. Throwing darts as a wizard just never made any sense to me.

That is something that I would be down with. Vancian at the core, so it is true to most past editions but a modular approach for those who want a little something extra. (maybe at-wills, meta magic what have you)

Not sure honestly. I liked the 3rd/3.5/PF versions of Sneak Attack. (and while I'm at it, the rogue talents from Pathfinder) Backstab brings up bad bad memories of being really useless in 2e.
