D&D 5E (2014) What sorts of things are you working on? (3PP or personal use homebrew)?

I'm working on a magic system that allows for spell failure and the impact of magical auras on arcane spellcasting.

    D&D 5E (2014) Proposed Fix for Whack-a-Mole Healing

These are the Wound Levels house rules I made to solve this problem--seems to work well for us. http://www.mindplaces.com/pictures/wound%20doc.pdf

D&D 5E (2014) Invsibility vs Cloak of Elvenkind

Do you apply any modifiers based on how much noise the rogue is making? What if the rogue is not moving, for example, or the area is full of loud noises?

D&D 5E (2014) Invsibility vs Cloak of Elvenkind

I'm curious why you decided to ignore the dim light? It seems like the rogue lost an advantage that they should have had from being in the shadows. While at the same time, telling the ranger that he beat the rogue's stealth score, but still can't see him, strikes me as odd. Would you have run...

D&D 5E (2014) Invsibility vs Cloak of Elvenkind

I don't quite follow...with light obscurement, the ranger has the ability to see the rogue, they just roll with disadvantage to do so. How did you establish that the rogue was unseen? So even though the rogue is in dim light, you wouldn't apply disadvantage to the ranger's Perception check...

D&D 5E (2014) What does "give away your location" mean?

Hey, thanks for the pointless snark. And extra points for presuming to know more about a perfect stranger than you actually do. For your information, I am the DM. Everyone else, I appreciate the useful advice.

D&D 5E (2014) What does "give away your location" mean?

"When you attack a target that you can’t see, you have disadvantage on the attack roll. This is true whether you’re guessing the target’s location or you’re targeting a creature you can hear but not see....When a creature can’t see you, you have advantage on attack rolls against it. If you are...

D&D 5E (2014) Invsibility vs Cloak of Elvenkind

I didn't say hard and fast rules. I said guidelines. Your example is a case in point. Should distance affect stealth? Nothing in the book suggests it should.

D&D 5E (2014) Invsibility vs Cloak of Elvenkind

The problem, as I see it, is that the rules generally (but not always) seem to distinguish between noticing someone by sight or noticing someone by sound. "A given area might be lightly or heavily obscured. In a lightly obscured area, such as dim light, patchy fog, or moderate foliage...

Critical Role Critical Role's Matt Mercer On Civility

Look up deindividuation. It's well documented that people are more likely to be unpleasant when they have more anonymity.

D&D 5E (2014) Invsibility vs Cloak of Elvenkind

So in your world invisibility is common but illusions are not? Why would the same guard not assume that there's a gnome hiding inside the illusion of stump? Or that a wizard just cast polymorph on himself? Or it's some kind of stump-monster?

D&D 5E (2014) Perception vs. Investigation in UA Traps Revisited - A problem again?!

The Player's Handbook clearly specifies that you might use Investigation when using the "Search" action: "When you take the Search action, you devote your attention to finding something. Depending on the nature of your search, the DM might have you make a Wisdom (Perception) check or an...

    D&D 5E (2014) Lingering Wounds Revamped

Healing Word has a range of 60 feet. How often are your healers so far away that they can't get within 60' of a downed character? It's a bonus action, so they can even disengage and run their full movement if necessary.

    D&D 5E (2014) Stealth for the Ranger

To me, a "military scout" is exactly what a ranger should be. Obviously opinions vary, which is why there are half a dozen different versions. You only get the bonus of being heavily obscured if you don't move and the person is more than 10' away from you. Useful for ambushes, not so useful...

    D&D 5E (2014) Stealth for the Ranger

You probably would, but it only works if you remain in the immediate area. And it doesn't work at all if you're in a city, indoors, or underground (I don't allow underdark rangers). A 6th level rogue who specializes in stealth gets an extra +3 to all stealth rolls, anywhere. Rangers force...

    D&D 5E (2014) Stealth for the Ranger

I'm trying to come up with a spell-less ranger that I like. To me, the ability to hide in the wilderness has always been a key skill of the Ranger that is missing in a lot of the spell-less rangers I've seen. I'd like to replace Hide in Plain Sight and Pass Without Trace with the following...

D&D 5E (2014) Invsibility vs Cloak of Elvenkind

D&D 5E (2014) Invsibility vs Cloak of Elvenkind

I was under the impression that the statement, "you can always TRY to hide" means that you still have to roll a stealth check. If you roll poorly, you're not hidden. There's nothing in the rules about getting advantage on that roll, even though vision is entirely out of the picture, so you're...

D&D 5E (2014) Invsibility vs Cloak of Elvenkind

But in certain circumstances, a cloak of elvenkind will make it easier to hide than invisibility will. I can't explain that. Why wouldn't invisibility also grant you an advantage?
