D&D General I really LOVE Stomping Goblins

Maybe "hate" was a strong word. Mildly annoyed. Primarily because one time when the party decided to capture an enemy it eventually led to me having a "please don't torture the prisoner" talk. I don't have many red cards, but torture's definitely on the list of things I don't want to narrate...

D&D General I really LOVE Stomping Goblins

But doesn't the player (and their character) know that killing is typically a part of the game? Unless the campaign was established as a non-lethal one before hand, death is probably going to be on the table. Typically you want to make a character appropriate to the adventure.

D&D General I really LOVE Stomping Goblins

I hate this situation when DMing. The party kills three bugbears during a forest ambush, captures the final one, interrogates it. Okay, what do we do with them? Leave them? Bring them with us? Kill Murder them? Or, oh we'll knock out these six bandits. And then... ? At the risk of getting...

D&D General I really LOVE Stomping Goblins

Goblins are fun opponents to run as they can really punch above their CR if you play up their nimbleness. Throw in a nilbog for extra spiciness.

D&D General What is Druidism in your game?

In my game, I conceive of druids as individuals who live on the fringe of society who commune with "small gods" such as fey and other nature spirits (in contrast to clerics, who deal with the "big gods"). Like Rangers, whom they are often akin to, they act as mediators between civilization and...

D&D 5E (2024) New Classes for 5e. Is anything missing?

An Eldritch Knight is just an Arcane Warrior with a thesaurus.

D&D 5E (2024) New Classes for 5e. Is anything missing?

Make a swordmage* class, give them all the underutilized Paladin smite spells (maybe even as weaker cantrips), call them "strikes" instead. Lean into Paladin as a "leader" type class instead of a striker to give the swordmage a clear niche. dodges chairs and tomatoes. *One issue I have with...

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

One of the many reasons I dislike the Twilight Domain: vague fluff plus overpowered crunch (poor Nature cleric). I wonder if this is a quirk of cleric subclasses being divided into domains. Similar to Wizard schools, I think this approach has robbed them of more interesting identities. I...

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

I generally treat druids (and warlocks) as individuals who have more direct relationships with "small gods" such a nature, beast, and fey spirits. In contrast, clerics have an indirect relationship with a "big god". I don't have a God of Magic, but I do have a God of Knowledge* who is credited...

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

So in the interest of turning this discussion back to something productive, I'm going to talk about my current campaign. I'm running a pointcrawl where the party is tasked with helping reestablish a town in a region that had been depopulated by a demon invasion years ago. The invasion is long...

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

Depending on how he's portrayed, saying Thor is just an illusion is almost like saying weather isn't real. Maybe I'm misunderstanding your point, but I don't see how a god would be less of one just because they came into existence through the collective actions and beliefs of mortals. That's...

D&D 5E (2014) Getting Rid of Variable Weapon Damage- An Immodest Proposal

How would you imagine damage types (bludgeoning, piercing, slashing) working in such a system? For me, the different weapon damage types are almost vestigial elements, with only a handful of creatures having vulnerabilities, resistances, or immunities to one type. So merging them all into...

D&D General What geographical size is best for campaign settings?

My setting, at least the explicitly described portion, is about continent-sized, but for campaigns I generally try to focus on only one small region, usually the borderlands where the weird and interesting stuff is happening.

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

This is an interesting point, and I struggled to think of good examples: Fantasy - Malkionism from Glorantha ranges from monotheistic to henotheistic. Sci-Fi - Dune has both weird developments of Old Earth beliefs and Bene Gesserit shenanigans. - The Catholic Church (now in Space!) is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Psionics in a sci-fi D&D

I think that a lot of books that are generally referred to as "hard science fiction" wouldn't meet that criteria; Ringworld, The Three-Body Problem, some others I can't think of off the top of my head (is Robinson hard science fiction?). Personally, hard science fiction comes across as more of...
