While I don't particularly mind the change, I don't think the needed to change it. However, if they were going to make a change, I'd have preferred something more along the lines of Hand of Radiance.

I'm pretty sure that the encounter powers are the "category" that they are referring to. Sounds to me that all wizard encounter powers will be affected, but that that is the only big fundamental change to any existing class as is.

I guess the main reason I don't understand all of the hubbub is this: These options are SUPPOSED to be at least a little more attractive than the HP/SP. That's part of the incentive to play the iconic race/class combos that they are portraying here with this new take on "favored classes."...

It is very good. Heavily focused on story and character as opposed to dungeon crawls and the "grind" people keep referring to. Currently, 6 out of the 12 adventures (originally written for 3.5) have been converted to 4th edition.

I've not tried that, no. Since another poster hooked me up with the maps via a private message, I haven't had any issue with the other adventures' maps, and nobody else seems to have this issue, I haven't pursued it. Should I run into the problem again in the future, I'll try your tip. Thanks!
