Is there a Relationship between Game Lethality and Role Play?

Can you (or anyone else for that matter) tell me which edition of D&D didn't have the sentiment "kill things and take their stuff" at the core of its game philosophy? :erm:

Is there a Relationship between Game Lethality and Role Play?

For some players, yes. I don't think it's really about the players making the choice though. The DM has to provide scenarios where avoiding combat is possible, and then allow the player's efforts to do so to work at some reasonable level. I've played in AD&D games where the players were all...

Question for Scott Rouse re: Retroclones

Where is this "it's a fan thing" coming from? OSRIC is, and always has been, about people creating and selling 1e compatible adventures and supplements. The very first OSRIC adventure ever published was released by Expeditious Retreat Press, one of the bigger and better known 3PPs in the RPG...

Question for Scott Rouse re: Retroclones

Umm... what??? No offense, but you seem to be woefully uninformed about the state of the retro-clone publishing scene. OSRIC products have been available from publishers like Expeditious Retreat Press, Goblinoid Games, Oone Games and Ronin Arts for the last 2-3 years. These are print products...

    Goodman rebuttal

He states very clearly in the post that he accessed sales figures included in court documents from various lawsuits TSR was involved in throughout the years. Whether those numbers are "hard, objective and concrete" is, I suppose, debatable. But presumably they're coming from the only entity that...

Question for Scott Rouse re: Retroclones

Considering that retroclones have been around for upwards of 3 years now with no legal challenge of any kind (and only a small but vocal minority of competing publishers with obvious conflicts of interest even raising the question), I'd say WotC have already made a pretty clear statement on the...

4e 3rd Party Products You Would Have Bought

I voted "other" because my true vote is "none of the above". I didn't buy 3PP products during 3e and I'm even less likely to be interested in them for 4e. Why? 1. 3PP stuff doesn't make it into the Compendium or Character Builder. I use those things all the time, as they are huge time savers...

If you can find a group that plays a pre-3.0 version of D&D or Retroclone would you:

If I had more time for gaming right now, I'd be looking for a 4e game. I wouldn't refuse to play a a pre-3e version of D&D (B/X is probably my 2nd favorite edition) but I'm sure I could find a 4e game before I could find a B/X game and I'd prefer to play 4e anyway.

Would you have been upset if Gold Dragons WERE LG?

I couldn't care less. Alignment is so irrelevant in 4e except for purely descriptive purposes that I don't even really look at that information for a monster. It wouldn't bother me at all if the MMs didn't even list an alignment for monsters. As far as I'm concerned a gold dragon is whatever...

    I've DMed 4e and I PREFER DMing: A poll

I would happily DM 1e/BD&D/OD&D and many other older game systems. However, since it's only a single choice poll and the real contest seems to be between 3e and 4e, I chose 4e. I love DMing 4e, but I'll never DM 3e again. Too much effort for too little reward, IMO.

    Games you won't play

I won't play AD&D 2e just because I know I like 1e better and it irks me every time we use a 2e rule when I prefer the way 1e handles it. The same holds for C&C. If I want to play AD&D or something like AD&D, I want to use the original that I know and love. I won't play Savage Worlds because I...

    I miss soft targets

This seems easy enough to do with 4e. Double the HPs and halve the AC on a party-level solo monster. That should do the trick.

    3.5 Player's Handbook Outselling 4E PH!!

Even that caveat would still make the assertion highly disingenuous. It would be like saying oranges are outselling apples but only counting the people who buy 1 apple at a time and not counting the people who buy pre-packaged bags of 20 apples each.

    3.5 Player's Handbook Outselling 4E PH!!

I'm not sure how you arrive at that conclusion from the list, since the 4e gift set (which contains the 4e PHB, DMG and MM) is outselling every 3.5 book on the list.

    Inconsistant/Arbitrary rules...

I always thought the max Dex bonus to AC for certain armors in 3e was really arbitrary and weird. A guy with a Dex bonus of +4 took a penalty for wearing Chainmail, but a clumsy buffoon with a Dex penalty of -2 was unaffected by the weight and encumbrance of his armor. WTF? Plus, the max Dex...

    Class Glut?

We could have 1000 classes and it wouldn't mean any kind of glut to me. I have 5 players in my game. That means I'm going to see a maximum of 5 classes at a time no matter how many books WotC publishes. More choice makes for happier players IME, so I say bring 'em on! :)

    Numbers, numbers, and more numbers

Have you tried asking them not to? I've never had a player do this. If someone new to my game did it, I'd ask them to change the way they communicated their rolls if it became a problem.

Brix, thanks so much for taking the time to keep ENWorld updated on this. Very interesting. XP for you!

Exclusive interview WotC President Greg Leeds

At least one question was answered. If they find a way to provide digital content, they plan to support out-of-print editions through that system. That, at least, is very good news.

    PHB2 sold out!

I read the rest of your post. It doesn't answer my question.
