    AD&D 2E Jumping back into 2e

So in preparation for D&D Next, my group decided to dust of 2e (our favorite) from a stint with 4e since the system was released. We're going to emulate what we think WotC is doing, and begin very basic (PHB, DMG, MC) until we feel it's time to add something, then we'll vote on what modular...

Mike Mearls Answers Questions About "Dungeons and Dragons Next"

"Why didn't they realize that sooner? Why did it take a board game to remind them this about role-playing games? Why was it the Ravenloft board game (as opposed to other ones; I can't remember if there were D&D board games prior to that one) specifically?" What is your point? They realized it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Another 5e Magic Suggestion

I like that initiative system, akin to Shadowrun, but more flexible. Doubt it would happen, but it sounds cool.

    D&D 5E (2014) Another 5e Magic Suggestion

I know there's a ton of threads about a new (or old) direction for magic in DnD Next, but I couldn't find one to address this little idea. Spells in combat should have varying degrees of casting time. Using the AEUD model, At Wills (and most Utility) are a standard action, Encounters would...

D&D 5E (2014) The Writing Style and Tone of 5E

I'd like to see the opposite, actually. Real evocative language designed to capture a feel of adventure. Mordenkeinen's Emporium vs. the AV boooks. I was just flipping through the 2e Player's Hanbook, and that stuff just popped off the page, inviting me to dive in and... adventure. 1e stuff is...

    Where the rot begins

What early signs of this are you noticing? Unless you have info the rest of us don't, there's barely anything on 5e to go on, much less make that kind of "where the rot begins" call. We are jaded and cynical here on the internets. The mechanics in 4e are more obvious, but I've enjoyed tons of...

Off to see the Wizards: The day that WotC showed me D&D 5th Edition

I keep hearing about the marketing goofs on WotC's part regarding 4e, but I don't really see it. Maybe cause I was following the gestation closely and was a client months before it even came out, but I'm wondering what everyone is talking about.

    D&D 4E Reply if you love 4e

4e is so easy to run and flexible that I could literally DM 3 times a week and not get frustrated or bored with it. (I'm not so lucky) That being said, 4e solidified something I've suspected for a long time: I prefer DMing MUCH more than playing. In the past, I've liked DMing, but the...

    co-DMing 4th edition

I'd love to do this, but I seem to be the only one keen on it in my group. Shame too, I could see a lot of benefits to splitting up the workload and having dynamic encounters as a result.

    How to get new rituals?

Unfortunately, if the DM doesn't want you to have them, I doubt you'll have them. I'd petition for their use though, they make a cool addition to the game. Some characters weaknesses are offset by their inclusion, and to not have them available kills some equality.

Review of Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Emporium by WotC

So after gushing about this book for several paragraphs, you gave it 3.75 because of the availability constraints? Really? How about you add that in a post-script, but not have it affect the score? I'm sorry you had to drive and get the book, and maybe WotC will learn from this fiasco, but in a...

    Werewolf without being a Shifter?

In a bizarre story-twist, I have a Genasi Warden who is due to be bitten and struck with lycanthropy. (No mechanics for this attack, just story.) I want to retain my Genasi identity and abilities, but I'd like to overlay it with a lycanthrope flavor and mechanics. I combed through the feats...

    Incarnum anyone?

Flipping through my old 3e books, I came upon the Magic Of Incarnum. I never got a chance to use this book, but I read over it many times. Anyone with experience using this book? Any thoughts of a 4e update? This would fit squarely under Unearthed Arcana on DDI, so the CB wouldn't support it...

4 Hours w/RSD - Introducing Undermountain (Ryan Dancey)

Can i ramble on about a mediocre homebrew and get a front page article too? Mod Note: While everyone is entitled to your own opinion about his work, we expect you all to be rather less rude about expressing it. Please, folks, try to make your criticism constructive. Thank you. ~Umbran

Flail Expertise and Power Strike feat support in MME

No game stores in or around Los Angeles? No internet connection to purchase from a gamestore with an online presence? I find these things hard to believe... Oh wait. You're trolling. Well played, sir.

    Powers outside of combat?

I was wondering how people embrace the use of powers outside of combat. For encounter powers, we have a flat "every 5 minutes" rule, but since combat is sped up outside combat, we do a lot of hand-waving-time-advancement. What got me really thinking were the powers that have sustain minor...

    D&D Diversifying and Rethinking

The most heartening thing I've been hearing lately is the return to print of Mordenkien's (sp?) Emporium. Not only is it great to see a once-dead book return to life, but I feel that the dry delivery of AV was Wizard's first misstep in 4e products, and whenever I point out the edition's...

I am *so* stupid! 'Heathen' is Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now!

Holy crap! The second I read it, that hit me. Never saw it originally myself either! Awesome!

Advice on Whether or Not to Join Encounters

You got a couple of potential paths ahead of you. 1) Suck it uo and keep playing with the current DM. He sounds like a joke, and an overall detirment to not only your game, but the product itself. If you stayed, you might serve as a reminder that not ALL DMs are easily flustered and ignorant...
