D&D 5E (2014) House Rule Idea: Knowledge Checks Never Fail (they just might make things worse)

So I got to try this out tonight and... It went great! A character's awesome Arcana Check gave a big clue to a puzzle they were solving, and another character's high Religion Check revealed a secret door hidden behind a frieze. The players also really appreciated that their characters would...

D&D 5E (2014) When players design the setting...

Here's the campaign introduction I'm going to start with. The players are going to choose options for their characters as we go, setting up the very first adventure (which they helped design!). The players wanted to start as prisoners brought together to retrieve something from the wilderness...

D&D 5E (2014) When players design the setting...

Some more updates before our Session 1 tomorrow! A map of the Far Marches, the setting of our first few adventures: A map of Wyvern Hill, the starting settlement the players came up with:

    D&D 5E (2014) Rolling for Passive Perception

You sit in your armchair with a hunting cap and pipe and give amusing remarks to your companion, Dr. Watson.

D&D 5E (2014) House Rule Idea: Knowledge Checks Never Fail (they just might make things worse)

Yeah, that would work for hidden rolls. I don't do any hidden rolls (I don't even have a DM screen), so players have a lot more info.

D&D 5E (2014) House Rule Idea: Knowledge Checks Never Fail (they just might make things worse)

Honestly I have so much fun playing / running Ironsworn that I can see myself moving more towards that. But I think adapting am piece at a time will work better for me than going all-in.

    D&D 5E (2014) Druid's Wild Shape House Rules!

This reminds me of a FATE Dresden Files game I played in. I was a werewolf, and my character was bad at people skills. So whenever we got in a situation in which he realized he could screw things up by saying the wrong thing, he'd just turn into a wolf. That way he literally couldn't say the...

D&D 5E (2014) House Rule Idea: Knowledge Checks Never Fail (they just might make things worse)

Thinking about this further, I think what I like about this idea is that it really fits my play style as a DM. Again, I've really loved Ironsworn because I don't know what's going to happen each session. The characters' rolls might make their friend a secret villain, might give them a castle to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rolling for Passive Perception

I've started planning out next week's adventure using this system, and you know what? Something about it is really fun for me. The secret door has a Perception DC +4. The trap has a Perception DC +6. The scorch marks on the door have a Perception DC +1. Only during play will I, as the DM find...

D&D 5E (2014) House Rule Idea: Knowledge Checks Never Fail (they just might make things worse)

The only issue I have with false information is that the player knows they rolled poorly, so it puts the player into an odd position of having to roleplay their character with false knowledge. That can be fun once or twice, but it's never been something I've enjoyed as a player.

D&D 5E (2014) House Rule Idea: Knowledge Checks Never Fail (they just might make things worse)

I've been playing a lot of Ironsworn, and one thing I like about it is that "failed" rolls make the world more interesting. For example, if you fail a Gather Information roll, you do learn information... just information that makes your quest more difficult! Let's say you're asking around the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rolling for Passive Perception

I'm thinking of trying out something strange as a DM regarding Passive Perception. As it is, I use Passive Perception in two ways: 1) When a character enters a setting, they perceived everything their Passive Perception would allow: hidden creatures, treasures, etc. Usually for secret doors...

    Wes Anderson Films, Ranked

I love Wes Anderson, his style really works for me. I can't really rank them in order since they've meant different things to me at different points in my life, but I'll identify my top few: Most Connected With My Youth: Rushmore I was in a failing high school that had an interesting attempt...

D&D 5E (2014) Experiment with Equipment Slots, I'd love your feedback

As a DM I've never been a stickler for encumbrance or inventory management; I've never found that players actually enjoy it. However, I was fiddling around with an idea and I'd love some feedback on it! Here is a link to the Google Doc I created. The basic idea is that each character has a...

D&D 5E (2014) When players design the setting...

Here's my first draft for a campaign map: Altar Hall: Seat of the Solarian Church. Bannerman’s Forest: A thick forest dotted by verdant clearings, babbling streams, and lush farmland. It is divided into many domains ruled by jealous knights, who fight constant squabbles against their...

D&D 5E (2014) When players design the setting...

For the initial adventure, I'm thinking of having the characters, along with a dozen other prisoners, told to wander into the northern wilderness in order to bring back a "dragon's heart." They're not too sure what that means, but they stumble upon the bones of an ancient dragon half-buried...
