If the character is multiclassed with a class that has said spell on its spell list, then no use magic device check is required - it is automatic. Otherwise, the Use Magic Device, and attempt the Emulate Spell Ability, with a DC of 20. You never need to get higher than 20 (this gives you caster...

back to the CR system I mentioned I'd probably find something else to moan about. :) I have two concerns - here's the first. One thing that I'm undecided about is how well (or not) the doubling factor in the CR system works, especially at the higher levels. A Greater Barghest (CR11, EL14) is...

Suggestion: Full hitpoints for players, NPCs, and monsters alike.

I'm not sure dragons need to become more powerful! ;) I use fixed, slighty above average hit points for PCs, and normal for everyone else. Darren

Re: Re: Re: ECL calculation and Demons This is interesting. I was concerned that Outsiders in particular seemed hurt by the savage species table. Do you have a source for this? Darren

Re: Re: Re: Re: ECL calculation and Demons Hello! :) Just a matter of perception. It's still a 'devastating critical'. It can matter - it depends how you put them back together. You can't bring a decaptitated corpse back with raise dead. So it can sometimes matter (though...

Suggestion: Full hitpoints for players, NPCs, and monsters alike.

Maximum HP and Clerics Another possible consequence of the max HP rule that just occurred to me, is that it might make clerics and other healers use up even more of these spells for that purpose, diminishing their effectiveness in other ways.

Suggestion: Full hitpoints for players, NPCs, and monsters alike.

If that's the intention, then it could be a good change - but I think it'll lead to spellcasters eschewing damaging spells and taking save-or-die, hold spells, polymorph other, and so on. One consequence of this might be that spellcasters become less consistent and reliable. (Which again, may be...

    Magic Item Size

The quoted text up in the first post is missing one sentence: "As a rule, size should not keep overweight characters, characters of various genders, or characters of various kinds from using magic items. Players shouldn't be penalised for chooisng a halfling character or deciding hat their...

Suggestion: Full hitpoints for players, NPCs, and monsters alike.

My problem with max hit points (and the reason I chickened out of using it) is the way it weakens magic damaging attacks. Spells are a limited resource, unlike melee and (for practical purposes) ranged attacks. But spells aren't, so each fight in which damaging spells are used are now much more...

Suggestion: Full hitpoints for players, NPCs, and monsters alike.

Actually, hit points might be considerably higher than average - but that's because the CON score can be higher with all those points. (But since CON is usually put high anyway, it might not impact much).

Re: Re: ECL calculation and Demons :p In Savage Species, Dragons and and Fey get (6 x Int mod) x (HD +3) and everyone else gets the total you quote. Looks like that'll be the new rule. Hardly. He does around 30 points on a normal hit, 70 on a critical, and 150 on a critical...

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: ECL calculation and Demons Sometging like that sounds the way to go, bu I understand your concern. I haven't seen the FF. Can you share what those changes are? Based on Savage Species, it looks like outsiders and dragons will be getting a lot...

Prove it :p Personally, I consider invention and genius to be different to intelligence. Otherwise, those prismatic dragons would [I]already[/] have invented fusion reactors. [Edited to add, just in case it wasn't obvious - it was a joke!] Darren

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: ECL calculation and Demons If its an attack completely out of the blue, yes. If the players know they are in hostile territory, they'll have such spells already cast. A 17th-level party wil universally need a '2' or more on their Will saves vs. a...

Or you're counting it once, with different costs. Fast healing 3 adds 0.3 to CR, and 2.3 to ECL, thus leading to the listed ECL cost of +2 over CR. Darren

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Fractional CR My understanding is that the difference from racial average are counted. So creating an exceptional individual of a race with the standard array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8, wchich translates to +4, +4, +2, +2, +0, -2) would increase the CR by +1; is...
