It needs to be more of a sandbox than a railroad?

Is it not fair to say that since they didn't go to the caves, you brought the cult to them? Unless maybe that nearby town was always there and not made up to facilitate the adventure?

D&D 5E (2014) Thundertree (5ed Starter Box Set) Possible Spoilers

Great question. After researching this, it seems the only CR/level appropriate method is via Basilisk. I'm leaning towards a chance encounter pre-dragon. The Druid hadn't reversed it yet before the dragon snatched her up.

D&D 5E (2014) Where is the point of medicine as a skill?

There is something you overlooked in the rules: 5e skills are not valuable nor hard to come by. Everyone has every skill. What you are calling 'skills' are actually 'proficiency bonuses'. These MAY be valuable, but are also not hard to come by. That's your technical mistake. Hope that helps.

So you're saying it's wrongbadfun to argue about this? :)

D&D 5E (2014) Where is the point of medicine as a skill?

Just wait for the healing wand. If it follows the others we've seen it'll not require any spellcasting ability and will auto-recharge...

D&D 5E (2014) Thundertree (5ed Starter Box Set) Possible Spoilers

Liking the "collect people" angle, and wanting to tie in the druid, perhaps part of the treasure is his daughter, turned to stone. The Druid has already failed to free her twice and the dragon has threatened to smash the statue to rubble if he tries again. He won't ever tell the PCs this out...

D&D 5E (2014) Where is the point of medicine as a skill?

As I understand skills in 5e, they're not remotely the same as they used to be. They don't limit what you can do, they only provide a (typically modest) bonus when you attempt things. Everyone can use thieves tools, for crying out loud.

    D&D 5E (2014) Meld into Stone - easy long rests mid-dungeon?

...I'm actually going to take that back. It's probably only enough room for two, and you're going to have to sleep seated.

    D&D 5E (2014) Meld into Stone - easy long rests mid-dungeon?

Stone Shape would cover the party though. 4x4x5 is legal and large enough to sleep in. You could also make sure it had ventilation and seal yourselves in... Particularly with the new semi-vancian system. Just prepare it once and cast as many as you can afford at the end of the day.

    D&D 5E (2014) How to stop a Thief

Assume any level - more higher level slots is good when you're about to pick a fight. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Meld into Stone - easy long rests mid-dungeon?

Oh and it also isn't clear what happens when it ends. The rules for expulsion don't cover it. So maybe it just fades.

    D&D 5E (2014) Meld into Stone - easy long rests mid-dungeon?

There's nothing wrong with the idea as presented. I do agree with the thought that it isn't very necessary. If you're a 5th or 6th level party (casting level 3 spells) you will have probably sorted out this whole resting thing by now. That said I also find monsters looking to remodel the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Battlemats?

I use them. I have also been know to print entire maps out to scale and paste them down one room at a time. A sheet of .220 26 x 33 acrylic helps. (Got him for just $28 bucks at the sign shop.) I use Paizo pawns as minis but have made my own pogs in the past.

    D&D 5E (2014) How to stop a Thief

Locate Object is good, but it's higher level.

It needs to be more of a sandbox than a railroad?

This definition of railroading is far too broad to have a meaningful discussion about RPGs. If you define out of game things as railroading then we are discussing different things entirely.

    D&D 5E (2014) How to stop a Thief

I'm thinking direct confrontation may be metagaming, unless there's an in game reason how you know who gets which missile.

It needs to be more of a sandbox than a railroad?

Shifting goalposts implies someone is keeping score. I'm not keeping score, are you keeping score? The third option you overlooked is where the GM says "this is what I had planned tonight, so it's either this or we play Munchkin". Because, again, social contract.

    D&D 5E (2014) How to stop a Thief

The spell list isn't a lot of help at low levels. Assuming you have 2nd lvl slots to burn, Arcane Lock is a decent choice. Otherwise, Find Familiar. Instruct it to hide among your belongings and keep watch. Notes to the GM are best. May I suggest a poisonous snake. Any creature, though, can...

It needs to be more of a sandbox than a railroad?

Both those examples cannot be "true" sanboxes, though, because you can't (typically) say "giants are dumb, let's go somewhere else". Or "that temple has been there forever, we can come back later". There ARE "rails" in any prepublished or even any prepared-in-advance setup. On some level you...

It needs to be more of a sandbox than a railroad?

Railroading, sandboxing, and illusionism are all tools in the GMs toolbox. Just as you wouldn't necessarily use a grinder to remove a nail, but sometimes it becomes your only choice.
