One stat boosting item is a bit harder to upgrade than others. Gauntlet's of Str into a belt of Str makes for a very odd upgrade, and has been forbidden in the LGCS (and by some DMs I know).

Sounds gimped compared to Roof Jumper, but I'll have to look it up. I was wondering how such a feat hadn't come up before when I saw it in Cityscape.

Actually I believe that's the name of the feat. Give me a moment to look it up. Well, I was close. It's a tactical feat called roof jumper, one of it's techniques is to make downward jumping charge attacks with bonus damage. It's in Cityscape if you're interested.

A level of fighter will take care of many proficiencies, and gives other nice bennies too.

Here's a thought: HP wizards are actually a low magic (4th level) spontanious casting class with either bonus reserve feats, an expansive spell list, or a DM that lets prestidigitation (or a higher level version thereof) do pretty much everything.

I'd say it depends on if you want to make a physical or magical character. For magical characters I'd place old and venerable at +1 CR. For physical characters I'd crop the CR by 1 at old, and 2 for venerable.

Of course it doesn't mean the head is what comes back as a Bodak. You may just end up animating a bunch of headless Bodaks and have rotting heads on sticks. So I'd look for a way to skewer the whole corpse to a pike that it can't break.
