    4e Magic in practice

While true that you were at the mercy of the GM (well there was spell research) you easily could have had many many many spells. Our groups wizards didnt have any problems having books of spells (but that is the different groups i played in and may be different for others). I didnt see ranged...

    4e Magic in practice

I didnt see 1e/2e mages as artillery myself though that was an effective strategy. There were many things they could do, it is just that blasting was viable due to low hp of critters. So blasting was very effective. SoD and similar spells were less effective in some (many) ways but still...

    4e Magic in practice

I guess I see it very very differently. they did a lot of damage spells due to their effectiveness (vs SoD due to easier saves) but they did a lot of things in combat due to the almost unlimited nature of the spell system, which is really similar to 3E. Now they had fewer slots and fewer...

    4e Magic in practice

Honestly that does not at all seem right to me. 4E is a complete change with how wizards work. 3E just allowed wizards to have more slots (and of course item creation). I dont see much of a difference from 1/2e to 3e and i see a huge difference to 4e. Obviously you see it differently, would...

Is a popular non-D&D traditional fantasy RPG possible?

Honestly I think many games have a lot of these qualities. I think it would probably take a lot more than this to get significant number of people to play it. I dont think there is that much room for a generic fantasty RPG that tries to do everything well (gritty, low magic, high magic). Those...

"Looks like we're going to win this battle . . . in about 90 minutes from now."

Maybe I am not making this very clear. Why would you not wait to use it when you are in a battle where you have a real chance of dying?

    My player wants an enchanter

Given its focus, i have doubts that it will ever do a classic enchanter much justice. Enchanter powers require so much adjucation from the DM and have such a wide breadth of utility. But this just means that the game is not well suited to create certain archetypes which is going to be an issue...

"Looks like we're going to win this battle . . . in about 90 minutes from now."

Would you use a healing surge though in battles where you are not threatened with actual chance of dying? General hp attrition has this impact (which was RC's major point in that thread) that even battles which you know you will routinely win without much threat are still tension as they...

What about 4th edition made you go AHHHH this is D&D to me.

This is kind of true for me. I have played so many friggin fantasy RPGs it takes more than orcs, dice rolling, classes and levels to seem D&D. Axe of the dwarvish lords and hand of vecna...now that gives it more of a D&D feel.

Is a popular non-D&D traditional fantasy RPG possible?

Ok..that helps some. I would think if the world is somewhat traditional (tolkienesque) the mechanics would really need to be original, something to pull gamers in. Honestly though I just don't think it would happen; possible but highly highly improbable. It would always come down to why would...

"Looks like we're going to win this battle . . . in about 90 minutes from now."

I do want to give you your kudos in that that you actually mentioned this might be an issue a long long time ago in a thread about managing resources in 4E. Now whether this is a big issue to most groups, i cannot say but just wanted to bring up that you had predicted this potential issue.

    My player wants an enchanter

While this is pretty good it unfortunately has issues in that this loss of resolve does not show its face in any other form of challenge ( ie noncombat, social challenges for example). This might or might not be an issue for the player. I like your line of thought and TSOY plays this way.

Is a popular non-D&D traditional fantasy RPG possible?

That is the most common usage of it to (didnt know Ron came up with it). Gaming in the late 70s and early 80s we saw so many of these games. They basically were D&D with the serial rubbed off and with one or 2 interesting new ideas. Heck I tried to make one or two myself. I think it is a good...

Is a popular non-D&D traditional fantasy RPG possible?

I believe this is absolutely correct. I think a traditional fantasy RPG is pretty much dead in the water to take any significant share away from D&D. You would have to appeal to a new group of potential players and not take existing ones. Frankly there are so many fantasy RPGs out there, if...

    I hate game balance!

Really depends on what the game is trying to do. If you want all players to have significant actions every round of and encounter and all actions are of comparable scope with identical number of actions available Then the 4E design is probably the best design for this (and this is why people...

    Theory: Coming to the Table

It started that way but kind of got bogged down into the roleplaying debate (i am a main culprit of this) vs understanding challenge resolution and how it impacts gaming experience.

    I hate game balance!

I think a better approach would be how do you allow potentially extreme differences in scope of a characters ability to affect the world and allow all the PLAYERS to enjoy the game and have spotlight time. Balance in D&D has always been about magic. How do you deal with the fact that the idea...

    Theory: Coming to the Table

Well once again, that is not succeeding at life that is succeeding at some goal in life. They are definitely not the same thing. In an RPG your character could succeed at a goal (killing the dragon) but you didnt win roleplaying. Conversely, if killing the dragon was boring then you didnt...

    Theory: Coming to the Table

No i don't think you can actually win or lose at life. You could set up conditions or goals in life to win or lose but at life itself, no you cannot win or lose that is just silly. Well unless you consider death as losing in which case you just lose. I am sorry but that really just doesnt make...

    Theory: Coming to the Table

If stories cant be games neither can roleplaying. You cant win or lose at roleplaying either. See this really doesn't get us anywhere. While the class is called a roleplaying game it originally was called other things as well (this nomenclature just stuck the longest) including fantasy gaming...
