D&D 5E (2014) How to run a criminal organization in a City with 8th level spells?

There are several options how to handle this. 1) Mighty magic is available on both sides, arcane and divine (use trickster/thief/death/assassin/greed-deities' clerics). As this is mostly on the NPC side (both for the goodies and the baddies), don't go too strict by the rules. Let them have...

    D&D 5E (2014) halforc paladin level 4 - ASI?

I'm playing with some friends now for about 30 years now (with breaks, every few months or so) - no surprise we are a killer team, listening to each other, and we're really good at focussing fire. A few years ago I started playing with my kids and some of their friends, so funny to see, when in...

    D&D 5E (2014) halforc paladin level 4 - ASI?

Level 9 now, in ToA. Shield Master was the right decision. What a great feat, both offensive and defensive. I shield-shoved so many monsters successfuly, they almost never have athletics. Chose str+2 in level 8.

Thoughts on how to run L1 characters with L6/L7 characters?

If the not-so-good players survived, and the others were killed mostly because of stupid behaviour, how shall the L1 guys survive their deadly L6/L7 comrades? :D Honestly, there seems to be more danger from the co-players than from the DM. As a DM, make it really bad for the high level fools...

Would you play a D&D campaign without leveling?

No. Best thing about D&D: PCs getting better and better. Just so fantastic and far from real life. :) So, slow advancement, yes. No advancement, no.

D&D 5E (2014) Middle Earth and aSoIaF martial campaign

Adventures in Middle Earth is really nice. It gets the Tolkien feel. Journey rules are great and make the travelling an adventure by itself. I currently DM an AiME campaign, players are at level 6. The only problem I see in the rules is the barbarian rage (okay, it's slayer's fury) resistance...

Crazy Idea...max HP of 20th level?

With the low damage output from monsters of medium to high challenge rating in 5e, I do not think that makes sense. I like the thrill of low level play, okay, not really in level 1, when falling off a horse can kill the wizard... That was the only good thing about 4e, the starting hitpoints...

The Only Thing I Don't Like About 5e! (Hint- ASIs)

One more thing: You really think high level characters are weak in 5e? Come on, remember the non-spellcasters in 1e? They were pretty useless compared to the cleric and the wizard and the druid at high level. Compared to 1e, 5e spellcasters are more powerful, and even more so the...

The Only Thing I Don't Like About 5e! (Hint- ASIs)

I also started with 1e, in 1986 or so? I played through all editions, the worst for me and my gang was 4e. 2e was a big jump towards player friendliness in terms of character building, 3e really good for streamlining some stuff (does really anybody miss thAC0 and saving throw tables? I don't)...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you replace stat bumps in feats?

"meaningfully skew the game", definitely not, but even small things add up. The paladin save bonus is a special class feature, a feat is available to everyone, so I wouldn't compare these. Why I still think it is a little too powerful (2 saves for 1 feat): When I play an offensive spellcaster...

    Shillelagh - Why no scaling?

There would be armies of fighters with the magic iniate feat and the shill cantrip... :D The fighter has enough feats to spend, more than one extra attack, and then a magic stick for 4d8 at level 17? Hehe, nice try... ;)

D&D 5E (2014) How would you replace stat bumps in feats?

Resilient is a good example where this method would fail: too powerful! 2 saves? Yes! This way any PC would choose Resilient at some point (at least my characters...).

    Help with an archer ranger

Tips on playing: 1) get more arrows and a 2nd short sword instead of long sword and quarterstaff 2) as an archer, stay behind the melee guys, move smartly to avoid melee character advancement: 3) level 2 is a BIG boost for the ranger, spells & fighting style 4) if allowed, choose Gloom Stalker...

Tell Me About Your Experiences With High Level 5E

I only DM'd a 5e campaign up to level 12, and then it started to get too "high-level" for me. The way they basically obliterated a beholder and a few of his nooks was frustrating. (Gosh, that dragon sorcerer was effective!) But I guess high level 5e works much better than 3e / 4e or Pathfinder...

    Table Rules

No to the above! :D We are all some decent guy, but sometimes it's great to behave like a 17-year-old. But it usually doesn't get out of bounds. Same here, and it works! :) Playing with another friend and his and my kids, yes, then we have about the same rules.

D&D 5E (2014) When a PC is dead and gone, what options do the players have at your table(s)?

We are always the same level. Different levels within one party can be fun, but mostly it's somehow annoying and / or frustrating. So if someone dies, the player will come back with a new character the same level.

    Everybody Cheats?

Really? No way. Why should I cheat as a player? It ruins the fun. The only time I cheat is as a DM, and then in both ways, for and against the players - but surely not to kill them. Either to challenge them more (monster was too weak, so let's tweak it "online" or send some help), or to save...

Pathfinder 2's Armor & A Preview of the Paladin!

I play 70% PF, 30% 5e, I really like both systems. The complexity and possibilities (concerning character building) of PF, the simplicity and kinda-old-school-feel of 5e (and that they completely ditched all 4e garbage...). While playing I always find that even 5e is complex enough, so I am...

    Warlock Changing Patron

Yep, or as a kind of redemption or even reward let another patron take him on (fey?). Leave his pacts and patrons as they are if the player prefers - just switch the "colors".

Rogues and rolling all the dice

Preparation is key to keep the game flowing. It drives me nuts when players start to collect dice when it's their turn, they can do that in advance easily on the others' turns. So the fireball throwing wizard should have 8d6 (or at least 4d6) at hand before his turn starts, same goes for the...
