I'm glad to see Lee Gold get the gig, I enjoyed both of the books she has worked on.

I realize both books include quite a bit of the PHB & DMG, but I just don't want to buy games with that many pages these days. But for those that do these are an excellent value.

But you aren't required to level after every session. There is no rule that enforces that.

It is easy to treat levelling closer to how D&D does it though, you just max out at 10 instead of 20 and I think may campaigns do that too.

The game I played gave us 3 free advances outside of Careers. One of us just added 3 extra attacks, sure there chance to hit was like 44%, but they got 4 shots at ti.

I think it comes down to assumptions and expectations. I think Classes can reinforce the Supers genre in a lot ways.

I think you are fortunate to not play with min maxers. There are tons of "class guides" out there and the reason there are is that they are popular.

I think when it comes to area-effect damage you should include more than 2 targets. Experienced spellcasters carefully choose where their spell drops. I think 4 targets would be a better number.

Under Draconic Paragon Chromatic Paragon is way too good and overshadows the other options by a mile. If you want to keep it I'd suggest a number of uses equal to their Proficiency Bonus.
