Can you railroad a willing player? (Forked from "Is World Building Necessary?")

One of my friends summed it up in a way that really works for me. He said that "The DM must preserve the illusion of free will, while maintaining the story's progress." This came out of a long discussion of weather characters or story are more important (his vote was for story, but that's a...

DM questions that make you go "Uh oh"

"The <wilderness area> is silent." "What do you folks have in your hands right this second?" "Who's holding the light source?" "The horses are nervous." "Hmm... I'm a few 12-siders shy here..." "Are you wearing your tabard with your holy symbol on it?"

What really happened to the god Mask in FR?

Emphasis mine... That's very telling to me, as Elminster is specifically mentioned as not being considered Chosen after Mystra's death. I'm hoping that Mask decided to go to ground until things cooled off, but we'll find out in December when the final installment of The Twilight War comes out. :)

    Monster creation

Yeah, it seems like the ongoing Will Defense penalty and the +5 damage (as opposed to +4 they recommend) reduce the attack by 2 for balance. Also, where are the minion rules? The Legion Devil minions are all nice and basic, but the Kobold, Ogre and Kruthik don't seem to match up with the...

What on earth does "video-gamey" mean?

Having spent far too much time playing WoW (around 50 days worth of time /played on my tanking Warrior alone), I feel able to help straighten this whole agrro thing out. In WoW the Warrior, Paladin and Druid have 'taunting' abilities. These abilities force one or more enemies to attack the...

Now that 4e is out, are you into it or sticking with a prior edition?

Have the 4e books, and that's the next D&D campaign I'll be running (after we break from western fantasy for a short L5R game using their 1st ed. rules). So far I've run the first half of KotS twice, along with the WWD&D Games Day adventures for my players. Some, mainly the less experienced...

    KotS Pregen Copyright.

*sigh* I really didn't want to cut this book up, but my alignment demands it of me ;)

DMing 24 hours after release! Am I nuts?

Well, if you have a FLGS you can get everyone to meet up at on the big day, you can ask about running the Game Day adventure, which is what I'm doing along with another DM that frequents the place near me :) Also, Keep on the Shadowfell is coming out on May 20th, so that might be good to try...

    GSL news.

If you mean the blogger jumping on a rumor? Yeah, I understand where you're coming from, but it's not a major-big deal anyway, the author has his/her opinion, and is welcome to it. Of course treating rumor as fact is bad form. If you mean Gene's posting of that link here, you need to turn up...

Deployed Military D&D Game Day! (needs you!)

Kant, are you a TF'er? I sent the link in a little while ago, but I don't see it on the front page... /curse my lite-ness

    Alignment/Multiclassing/DM Screen/Power Source From I-Con

Yeah, his feelings on WoW were prompted by a questioner who asked "I hate WoW. Will I hate this game?" Mearls then explained that he didn't enjoy the game after trying it for a while. Speaking as a WoW player who got a taste of 4e combat yesterday, they're not all that much alike.

Which WotC settings in 4th Edition?

From the panel at I-CON: Greyhawk and Dragonlance areis on the 'short list' (FR and Eberron were previously announced), and they're still looking at 1 world/year. They also 'intend' to continue supporting Greyhawk due to it's legacy. Sorry for the ninja-edit

My Demo Experiences at I-Con (Trap info-low crunch)

Actually, my cousin had the Warlock, and I think it's and encounter power, but I'd have to call her and ask when she gets home from class later tonight (we got to keep our sheets! :D)

    Alignment/Multiclassing/DM Screen/Power Source From I-Con

True, but that doesn't mean that expanding on a good idea is a bad thing (assuming it *is* a good idea, never really played Eberron). Again, true, but we don't know how the system will work in detail. For all we know, you pile a bunch of magic items around the one you're making/improving and...

My Demo Experiences at I-Con (Trap info-low crunch)

It was!! Honestly, that game left like a more high-magic Hybernia/Conan game than I've had the pleasure of playing in a long time. Clerics have some neat stuff to do (just roll over a 7, which I only did like, once) and the bonuses granted to allies for hitting monsters don't feel out of...

will wizards of the coast do D&D classics in 4th ed

Actually, a question akin to this was raised this weekend at I-CON, when someone asked how hard a conversion would be. The guys said "It should be very easy." Apparently the xp-based encounter system should allow you to recreate these modules with only minor changes. I'm looking to collect...

    Mearls is your hostage!

S'truth!! Then he made several polite excuses about an airplane, bribed Gene with some dungeon tiles and vanished. Thrice-damned Eladrin game developers.....

Gene?! You were our mage?! I had the Cleric in that group! PS All hail the Hypnotoad!
