I'm not so sure about that, the Monster Stats have changed dramatically over time. On the other hand 5E doesn't care to much about the balance between Monsters and Players so it might be all right even with big Stat-Changes (Princes of the Apocalypse includes Random Encounters with over 10 times...

Spells that require an Attack Roll just work like Ranged Weapons .. they have to account for Cover and have Disadvantage in Melee. But they can also Crit. Spells with a Save ignore Cover and Melee, but cannot crit (and are not as satisfying because the enemy rolls the die :P ).

But with that houserule you make the high level functions of Hex useless. The Problem for me is not about damage but that that it needs Concentration, where you have much more important Spells that could occupy it like Invisibility, Hold Person, Suggestion, etc.

With the Sword Coast Adventurer Guide we have another Martial Archetye: Purple Dragon Knight: A noble Fighter who Inspires his friends by enhancing his special Fighter Features to help his Friends .. but only marginaly and rarely.

I don't think you get a free attack if someone approaches you. You only get one if someone move more than 5 feet within you reach (walking around you).

Also the Fey-Warlock is usually mischievous but more often a positive than sinister..

Ah, that low Int/hight Wis angle makes perfect sense. So they are too dumb to learn true Wizard spells, but their fascination of all things Arcane makes them great supporters for those with real powers (tedious Research, looking for new Artefacts/Books, calm the angry mobs,..) and the Gods award...

I don't think that's the same. A War Cleric is a great supporter of WAR, where not only Fighters are needed, but also those men who motivates the troups, bless their Weapons, heal the wounded and pray for the dead (and still fighting side by side with the pure Fighters). Thats also the same...

I cannot wrap my mind around Arcane Domain Clerics. Why would a follower of Mystra (or other God of Magic) become a Cleric instead of Wizard?

You need them for spells that require a Material Component. But you can use a Component Pouch instead. You find the Rules under "Components" on Page 203. There is no such thing as a casting style. Spells just have up to three necessary Components to cast it .. verbal, somatic and material...
