Its amazing. I am really impressed about how much use I get out of them - and how cheap they are. It is definitely worth getting multiple copies. A game store went out of business a few months ago and sold everything half off. You bet I loaded up on those.

There are a surprising amount of good ones in the Dayton, Ohio area but very few of them come out for Game Days and such. Of the people in my Friday night group (7 people and me) only two were there. Of my Sunday group, only one was there (and it was one from the above 7).

I think one reason they come off as irritating is because some of these NPCs were the pet characters (or NPCs) of the designers. What started out as adding in a character for flavor turned into a monster in no time. You need some name dropping? Just toss Elminster around and there you go...

I once had a Call of Cthulhu game set in the modern period where the cult was dedicated to Shub Niggaruth (the fertility goddess - sort of) and the cultists were ensconced as figures in a porn studio. On the side they were doing REALLY terrible snuff films. That certainly got spooky.
