Ryan Dancey on Redefining the Hobby (Updated: time elements in a storytelling game)

Going back to the Original Post, however.... We can talk about the state of the industry all we want or TRPGs vs. MMORPGs. It's all been said before. Ryan Dancey makes some intriguing points. Basically, what if D&D were more like Warhammer Quest or Arkham Horror? Both of these board games...

Ryan Dancey on Redefining the Hobby (Updated: time elements in a storytelling game)

I think this is an excellent point. While there are certainly people who are leaving D&D for World of Warcraft and etc...not everyone will. More importantly, I'm not convinced that a vast majority of power gamers will. For me, my skepticism comes with the massive time sink it takes to get into...

    Northern Crown

Dude, Iron Kingdoms isn't going anywhere for a while. At least as long as their Warmachine gravy train is still a cruisin'. As far as Northern Crown goes, go pick up Witch Hunter. Any fan of NC would do well to check that game out. Set in colonial times? Check. Super-bad villains with cool...

    Is Origins going downhill?

I'm surprised to hear that Origins is going downhill. The reports from the roleplaying sector said their numbers actually were up from last year, which was a good year for Origins as well. But that's only one aspect of gaming in general. Yeah, having it right up against the 4th of July was...

    Discussion of Art in D&D

I remember early on that the developers of 3rd Edition were trying to move away from the Medieval influence of the game towards what they called, "A D&D based culture". For example, they stripped away the Asian look of the monk and tried to make it fit, not into a Medieval paradigm (where it...

Should D&D Have an Alternate Death Mechanic?

I would second many of the other posters here with the idea that I don't like resurrection in my games. Coming back from the dead is weird. If you think about it, say you lost your mom in a tragic car accident. You grieve. You deal with it. You go through a funeral. Then, a week later, she comes...

Homebrewers: How Publishable is Your Brew?

My d20 Future stuff was pretty much almost publishable. I wrote up alot of backstory in an organized fashion, dropped in pretty pictures, made charts, stat blocks, equipment lists, etc. However, all of the pictures I used were grabbed right off of the web somewhere and were very much...

Monte Cook on target audience of RPG Supplements

From my own experience, this is true and not true all at the same time. I've certainly known many game designers who don't play their own games, because they simply didn't have the time. (Too busy designing!) Or their group was into something else at the time. That was certainly my problem for...

    Origins: Why no Wizards????

As far as the RPGA goes, I know that the pulled out of Origins last year, but in that year, the Origins gaming reg increased their ticket sales of RPG games without the RPGA being there. Thus, the RPGA have returned this year, not wanting to miss out on the action. A "strained" relationship...

    RPGs with the Best ART

Seconded. Not only is the art great, but it really captures the flavor and atmosphere of their very unique world.

    Gama Trade Show

From what I hear, the buzz was all about WotC and the Digital Initiative. People trying to second-guess what WotC was up to. The word I got was: "Conspiracy theories abounded."

    How to un-cheese D&D?

I don't think so. However, it wouldn't be hard. d20 Modern is designed to be used with the standard monster manual. So you could use most of the same monster stats. D20 Modern, if used for a fantasy system would solve most of the problems that you have. Magic is toned way down. It's much...

Wizards of the Coast and Golden Age of Fantasy

I definately think we're living in the Golden Age of Fantasy. I and my friends talk about that all the time now. WoW could be successful unless it were appealing for people to pretend to be dwarves, elves, orcs, etc. Furthermore, I would submit that we are living in the golden age of...

    How to un-cheese D&D?

Use the d20 Modern System for your D&D. Problem solved. :]

    Spooky Music

I'm a big believer in music in games. I don't run it without music. But it depends on your group. Some people hate it. Obviously, it works for your group. If you want evil chants, I might recommend the first track of Bram Stoker's Dracula, which can be found on iTunes. However, that track is a...

How fast do you level in 3.x? (read before you vote)

I think frequency of play factors into what happens at the table. For example, one group I run advances after each session, because it means so infrequently. We're lucky if we game 1 time in 1 month. However, the regular game that I play in advances much slower.

[CoC] Difference in Call of Cthulu Editions?

So later editions still have people rolling stats randomly? Just curious.

How to run a low magic fantasy game?

If you're already using d20 Modern, that will do nicely. Casters don't start casting spells until about 4th level. And even then, the spell list is quite limited. What balances this out is that in a low-magic setting, there aren't alot of safeguards against magic. So a simple invisiblity spell...

[CoC] Difference in Call of Cthulu Editions?

Quick question: I recently picked up CoC 5th edition. I got an older book from the 90's. What's the difference between this edition and the current one?

Undead: is the person's soul trapped?

Of course, undead and the trapping of souls will depend on the setting. In a Diablo-esque setting where it's perfectly legit to play a necromancer, probably not. However, if you go by the strict origins of zombies...vodoo...then yes. In fact, in vodoo, a zombie is exactly that: someone who's...
