    Villain Motivations

The thing is, a villain is most likely to see one combat encounter - the final fight with the PCs. Or maybe two at the most. So focusing on the crunchiness is sort of a waste of time. The motivations and character are what will stick with the players and their characters. That being said...

    The most lame Abyssal level

You fall to the ground and wake up to see a young blon-haired kid with a viking helmet on his head carrying a large, glowing club. He says, "Look, Uni! More weirdos!" You then realize that this young kid with his pet unicorn is one of the most powerful beings on the layer, and all of his...

LoTR: One Book To Rule Them All?

No, nor did I claim it to be. All of his stuff from the races to the names he used were borrowed from other myths and legends. But his work, in turn, heavily influenced other people. That's all I'm saying.

LoTR: One Book To Rule Them All?

What makes a D&D game too derivative of LotR? That's a hard call. It would probably depend. I've seen some campaigns that are pretty much a rip-off of LotR...but they were great. Then, I've seen some that were pretty different from LotR, and were great too. I think it's like anything. You can...

I hate Tolkien: suggest a fantasy setting.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Arcanis. What attracted me to the setting was that I wanted something different from the standard Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes D&D....but I didn't want something so different as Ebberon. The opening of Arcanis sold me immediately. They said that instead of basing their...

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

This is an interesting question because it says literally, "ditch the d20 system." There's a possibility that you start up a company not ever have been in the d20 system at all. Pinnacle comes to mind, with their start up of Deadlands. AEG's 7th Sea also comes to mind. From what I've seen...

    D&D Wild West style!

As far as core races, in my campaign, I made it very human centric. Mainly because when I think of the Wild West, I think of humans. It's hard to picture your classic elf or dwarf in that setting. I could definately see the elves as a native race. However, in my setting, I made lizardmen the...

    D&D Wild West style!

Actually, I'm in the middle of designing a D&D campaign world with a Wild West feel myself. IMC, what I did to establish a Wild West feel was to first lay down the foundation. The Wild West has to be on a frontier somewhere. It has to be a good distance from civilized society, or the...

    Wizards in a rough patch?

Exactly. We're in agreement. So what I'm trying to say is...they've used the "environment" and "genre" books as a replacement for a 1 book setting format. They give the choice to the consumer as to what setting you want to do. If you want to do Al-Qadim, for instance, you'd probably start with...

    Wizards in a rough patch?

I would agree. Wizards hasn't run out of steam. But they are running out of open ground. At this point, what else could they release for their game system that hasn't already come out? The list of marketable idea for product gets shorter each year. As far as "single book settings"...WotC has...

    Wizards in a rough patch?

Wizards has run into the same problem that all RPG companies run into... Any game company can only release so many sourcebooks until it runs out of steam. You can release a Player's Guide, Game Master's Guide, World Setting, and few upgrade books (Player's Options or GM Options). But once...

    Where do monsters come from?

I just use the medieval model. In the Middle Ages, there was civilization and society, but people really believed there were monster and demons out there in the night. The reason they believed these things were because there was still alot of wilderness in the world - areas that were untamed or...

    I want to see D20 <fill-in-the-blank> [Thread from 2002]

Interestingly enough, many of the proposed d20 games exist. At the beginning of the thread, someone mentioned d20 Gamma World: well it's already out. d20 Boot Hill exists...sort of. d20 Mecha also exists: In d20 Future.

    d20 backlash??

Most games out there that are not d20 are rules-lite. Now, before I go on, keep in mind that when I say "rules-lite system" I am speaking in relative terms. All roleplaying games need to have sophisticated rules because they are trying to simulate real-life situations through dice rolls. The...

    d20 backlash??

I would agree with many here that d20 'blacklash' is too harsh a word to describe what's going on. But I would also agree that the d20 bubble has burst. We will definately see more original game systems out there. The other game systems out there will probably be stronger after the bubble...

    What happened to the story?

A great game source for me has been the d20 Menace Manual. Overall, the book is an excellent resource with a great balance of fluff and crunch. The crunchy bits provide monsters and critters. But the great fluff discuss various organizations like the CIA or secret societies that are awesome for...

    Slavery and evil

Well said! Ethically speaking, any given action is right or wrong, despite what someone may believe. I'm just putting my hat in the ring and saying that slavery is a (D&D) Evil act, no matter who you are. And I agree that it would be entirely possible for a (D&D) Good person to be a...

    Slavery and evil

Oh, I strongly disagree. There is alot of evidence that the people of the medieval ages knew exactly how oppressed they were. Alot of writings from people of the time both male and female point to the idea that they knew that the existing system was incredibly unfair and oppressive.

    Slavery and evil

Wow. Iron Sheep has some great points. I'd have to say that loss of freedom would definately count as oppression in my book, because despite any luxuries that you might have, you lack basic choice in your life. Quality of life and luxury have little to do with whether slavery is evil...
