    The Surprise round anomally

But the important thing is to allow a perception check.

Sensing the presence of magic - isn't the mechanic backward?

There's more to "magic power" than raw energy.

    The Surprise round anomally

Fire a missile weapon? Blast with a spell? At least it's not like first edition where the folks who surprise get to take some random number (1d6?) of rounds of action (technically "segments" in which they can make a round action) before the surprisees get to react. I don't know if anyone...

"Aid Another" on Heal Checks for Disease?

That would mean that untrained people have no real chance of succeeding, and if you do succeed in making the DC, you've succeeded in the skill so aiding another is useless. How about aiding another is the DC minus 5? After all, you aren't, for example, mixing the herbs for the healing poultice...

"Aid Another" on Heal Checks for Disease?

For something like this I'd allow ONE other character to attempt to aid another. More "doctors", especially untrained ones, would probably hinder the attempt.

Is Fey Step really the best racial power?

I picture a shoot-out between elves and halflings as kids playing cops and robbers: I shot you! No you di'nt! Yes I did!

Holy Symbols: are they God-specific? Can they be altered?

Versasimilitude. The appearance of being somewhat real but also being adaptive and changeable as needed.

Holy Symbols: are they God-specific? Can they be altered?

Oooh, how about this: Holy symbols are just a blank disk of metal until a cleric picks it up/weilds it/whatever, at which point it morphs to the appropriate holy symbol. And then one dreaded day, the cleric of Bahumut is shocked with horror as his beloved bahamut symbol somehow becomes that of...

    Kobolds: Too powerful?

To be a tad pedantic, kobolds are NOT a PC race. They are a monster race, in the Monster Manual in a section that clearly states that these racial stats are not balanced for use as PCs.

    Kobolds: Too powerful?

Why ironic? Kobolds have been getting more and more powerful since their start. People have a strong desire to "surprise" players by making weak monsters powerful, and kobolds have reaped the benefit of this. Shifting as an at will minor action? What race wouldn't want to trade their...

Help! A player wants to play "Captain America"

Tell him to play Mutants and Masterminds. I keep seeing posts like this, "one of my players only plays silver dragons.... I only want to play a necromancer with an army of minions, I only want to play a mind-controller... my player will only play if he can be a Tolkein-esque immortal elf..."...

Is Fey Step really the best racial power?

The half-elf cleric in my first game took eyebite, it seems like a solid choice for him (since it uses cha, which he had).

Is Fey Step really the best racial power?

Having witnessed an eladrin wizard ruin my cunning plan by sleeping and then feystepping and CDGing my big bad enemy (a sniper guy up on a platform), I think it's pretty powerful. And fun; you can always find a reason to teleport 5 squares.

    Acrobatic Stunts

I can picture situations in which an acrobatic stunt can let you avoid an opportunity attack; not something like "I backflip around the bad guy" but something like "when I dash by the berzerker, I slide under the table to use it for cover".

    How Many Encounters?

Exactly. You take out the first room of kobolds then take a rest? Fine. "What's that sawing and pounding noise?" "It's the rest of the kobolds, shoring up their defenses."

    Difficult to build race/class combos

Eladrin Paladin Teleporting to aid an ally is always good. Plus you get a bonus skill, which is always useful. Eladrin Cleric Again, the fey step is always useful, along with the extra skill. Tiefling Fighter The bonus to hit bloodied opponents is useful, and you will often be able to make...

    What happened to "Race Matters"?

I'm glad they didn't make race more important; I don't want some racial paths shoehorning class choices. I'd rather have more variety, allowing more options for things like dwarven wizards, tiefling fighters, and halfling clerics.

    How Many Encounters?

Another important factor is the fickle finger of fate, aka the dice hate me. You could plan an easy introductory encounter, and the next thing you know the party has used up all their second winds and healing words just because Nilbog the Golbin kept rolling 20s.

    How Many Encounters?

I say it's up to the players. There are normally some logical places to rest, and some obvious times/places where you don't want to.

In other words, "yeah, I was missing something obvious!" :o How many other reliable powers are there?
