    Minions and the Iliad

I've also had a bunch of success pegging things 1 level lower for the humanoids. Goblins have too many hit points, so there are some level 0 and level -1 goblins and kobolds wandering around. But yeah, hp are too high.

The Nature of Change (or, Understanding Edition Wars)

I don't intend this as flame-on, it's meant to be honest disagreement: I don't see it. I also don't play WoW, which might not make me the best judge of this, but the specific design principles that they share seem to be shared because they're clever game-design principles. There have been...

D&D 4E If you had to choose; end of 4e OR 4.5e?

I'm for "4.5" -- but I don't want to go back to 3.x, exactly, but even further back. I want NWP, dagnabbit. Evil Hat would roll some damn fine D&D. I want the Dresden Files RPG!

The Heroic Impulse: Where Have All the Heroes Gone?

Neither Luke nor Anakin may _fail_ at anything. They're authorial characters; there is no element of chance in their doings at all. While you can read the situation as you present it, all of the dice have to fall exactly correctly in the absence of rules to allow tweaking random results or a...

Manual of the Planes Excerpt: Shadowfell

I feel certain I'm going to regret asking this -- but how so? Sure, there's not much detail on what the domains are, but what's so horrible about saying "there are mysterious and unknown demiplanes out there which cannot be escaped; they tend to be solipsistic about a single dark point, which...

    Disappointed in 4e

I think there's still a disconnect here. I'm with you that a good night's rest shouldn't heal all wounds -- but that's still a third issue beside the Healing Surge thing. Consider the following worlds: 1) As in 1e, you have your total X HP and precisely 0 healing surges. You cannot benefit from...

    Disappointed in 4e

Only in proportion to the amount that 4e hp are a departure from this model. That is to say "not much" and "not much". edit, expanding, so as to provide something useful: Firstly, it's beginning to annoy me that people conflate Healing Surges with Second Winds. Healing surges are quite...

    D&D 4E How I Fixed 4e

Sounds pretty cool to me, modulo the x2 cost on healing :) I've found that the powers system is pretty good, but I cannot abide the flavor intended for most of the powers. The "godlasers" meme is, in fact, a pretty terrible one. That said, spiritual warfare that has physical effect on ones foe...

D&D 4E Running player commentary on PCat's 4E Campaign - Heroic tier (finished)

Precisely, though I was worried that since you could just second wind, you'd do that instead. I thought of the 2x cost, but was loathe to recommend it 'cause you had such a neat system already. Good to see we're on the same wavelength :) You can still second wind yourself back up onto your...

D&D 4E Running player commentary on PCat's 4E Campaign - Heroic tier (finished)

Cool. That's what I thought. You can still mostly zip up, though -- I'm pretty sure normally you'd be able to second wind or convince the healer to help you 1/10 minutes, thus heal up by simulating an extended rest. I'm not sure what the rule there would be -- "don't be a dick" I guess?

D&D 4E Running player commentary on PCat's 4E Campaign - Heroic tier (finished)

You're still allowing Second Wind: When can healing surges not otherwise be voluntarily spent? It sounds like you're trying to prevent short rest healing, but can't you still do that with a series of heal checks?

    Designing a 2e Retro-Clone

I'm just an interested observer, but my $.02 says: 1) perfect is good. 2) Feel free to expand the core. "Publish" it separately. (in other words: don't expand the core, but do feel free to muse :) ) 3) Reorganizing spell schools is good. Other changes are probably not worth it. 4) Kits: Depends...

    gimme back my narration

Fair enough :) I think the difference for me is that in my version, it's not a description of the power as it is -- it's a description of a specific _use_ of the power, historically. You can mix and match them, but as you add special effects, it's probably good to also add the illusion of...

    gimme back my narration

Add me to the list that wishes they had just left the description off. It gets worse in the adventurer's vault, though this is previewed in some PHB powers -- Fire hands Wizard Attack [MadeUp] "This spell causes flame to shoot from your hands and set foes near to you alight" Arcane, Fire...

    I played 4E today. I died.

My condolences to your clan. Which of the party took your stuff? What was the rest of the party playing? What's your new character's motivation? How do you do reintroducing yourself to the party? Man, this thread's just gonna moulder if all it consists of is a dead dwarf. Where's the rest of...

Forked Thread: Should complexity vary across classes?

What I find interesting is that the level of effectiveness (not necessarily fun) goes, roughly, 1) poorly-played wizard 2) poorly-played fighter 3) well-played fighter 4) well-played wizard in 3.x, but I haven't quite measured the diff in 4e; it's likely to have the same relationship between 1&4...

How do monsters heal outside of combat?

Off topic, but [giant evil brain alien whose name I'm too lazy to look up]THAT IS NOT HOW POTIONS WORK[/gebawnItltlu]. Potions consume healing surges just like second wind, so if you're trying to justify it, better would be a friendly lvl 2 cleric or just generalized "it heals quickly, 'kay?"...
