D&D 5E (2014) Where does the punitive approach to pc death come from?

To go back to the OP: PC death is not punishing in my book. It simply happens. I for my part as a DM try to gauge the challenge and adapt it to the party power, and I prefer it to be lower than higher to avoid "unnecessary" deaths. But sometimes in the campaign the PCs face overwhelming...

D&D 5E (2014) Where does the punitive approach to pc death come from?

On the same token, why bother with combat at all if you can't die? To show how the PCs are awesome?

D&D 5E (2014) Where does the punitive approach to pc death come from?

IIRC True Resurrection doesn't. Or a wish. Nor a god. Was it a Paladin? Does the Power he worship(ped) see his role in the world not yet fulfilled? Fine, the Paladin gets resurrected, maybe after a quest, maybe with a powerful geas bestowed upon him.

D&D 5E (2014) Where does the punitive approach to pc death come from?

No. It's called "plot hook": you care for a friend? You go and try to have him resurrected. Or do your PC care more about raiding the dungeon than bringing back a friend?

    D&D 5E (2014) Permanency

Exactly what I thought of the issue, and that's why I started the OP: to check if perchance I overlooked Permanency. By the way, IIRC Contingency is back, so Permanency has some hopes! [emoji6]

D&D 5E (2014) Where does the punitive approach to pc death come from?

Hmm...so, why should the group not choose to go questing to have their valiant companion, who held the hallway, resurrected?

D&D 5E (2014) Crafting Scrolls and Brewing Potions

I do beg the pardon of all, but 4 days for a Potion of Healing don't strike me as "prohibitive", especially since the amount of healing already in the game (i.e.: you probably won't need it that much frequently); Greater Healing at 20 days starts to be a little high, I'm with you, and Superior...

Third Party Character Creation iOS App Removed

Hmm...but they're selling their own brand hamburgers, not McDonald's ones but cheaper. The competition is then on the brand, the recipes, the stalls and so on. Not the same actually. What you're hinting at is what has been going on with, say, Paizo: they're selling a different taste of RPG...and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Salior Variant: Bad Reputation

Was meant as a take on a cheesy troupe. Sorry of it didn't come across.

    D&D 5E (2014) Salior Variant: Bad Reputation

Well, in BECMI and in 2E (aka AD&D) at least [emoji6]

    D&D 5E (2014) ugh another zombie question

No, since Animate Dead has an "Instantaneous" duration.

    D&D 5E (2014) Salior Variant: Bad Reputation

The average innkeeper is a 20th level Fighter (Champion, per 5E rules), OR 20th level Rogue (Thief. If you're lucky) [emoji6]

    D&D 5E (2014) [5e] D&D 5e good spell combos

The wizard would do the casting, the familiar is there only for providing help (and thus advantage). You're referring to a different use of the familiar.

    D&D 5E (2014) Background for a mischievous Halfling?

Charlatan seems to me a perfect fit: you just have to select/roll the Bond aspect, for the Personality, Ideal and Flaw seem all defined in your post for me. Have fun.

D&D 5E (2014) What to do when Pc's die? What then for that player?

This reflects my opinion too, although from a DM perspective: I think it's easier to identify in a character when you play it through the low levels. Moreover you get to learn the strengths and weaknesses of the class, adjusting them while growing, instead of coming into play against a strong...

    Seeking Numenera/The Strange campaign ideas

So that you can have the PCs explore the remnants of the Daleklings, seeing them as they are in the Ninth World...and then have them visit the places when they were built and fully functional, thus creating a sense of continuity.

    Seeking Numenera/The Strange campaign ideas

Hi! My two cents to revive this thread; I'm not versed in The Strange, only in Numenera though, and I think that will bias my post. The campaign arc you described seems interesting and has big potential, but I can't really see how does it fit into the Ninth World theme: are your Daleklings...
