    Probability Distribution of Dice

You can use the standard deviation formula, inputting it into Excel or some other program, say. For example, 3d6 has a mean of 10.5 and a Standard Deviation of ~2.95. This is a little rough, but you can verify it for yourself. Over 2/3rds of the population is within one Standard deviation of...

    Fixing the DMG Demographics

For its attributes, d20 just breaks down with obscenely large numbers of people. Coruscant, for example, should have 25 people with all 17s or better. I don't believe for a minute that Yoda only started with a Wisdom of 15. Maybe for d20 modern though, but it's still stretching it.

    Fixing the DMG Demographics

Well, for my program you can certainly adjust the CR base of a race to take such things into account, but... Seasong's method makes elves consistently 10-20 levels higher before perishing (if at such levels they're gonna perish at all) Edit: To clarify, I don't want whacked out elves, and I...

    Yet Another Program

Well, the problem with the DMG breakdown is that you can't extrapolate a nation from its member communities. In other words, I want it to be possible to get the same results by generating a community of 12,000, and twelve comminities of 1,000 (if they're close enough together... what's the...

    Fixing the DMG Demographics

People face challenges all throughout life, of many different kinds, and learn from them. For my program, the encounter is spread out over an age category - 5 years for humans, on top of which it can be adjusted for a number of factors afterwords anyway.

    Yet Another Program

So, I was inspired by a certain thread ( http://enworld.cyberstreet.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=43109 ) to finish a proof of concept for a community building program I'm designing. http://www.anenris.com/rpgs/builder/index.html It's not really the program itself that's all that hot - I...

    Fixing the DMG Demographics

My program (above) uses age categories for levelling instead, so you don't get whacked out elves, say.

    Fixing the DMG Demographics

I made a little 'proof of concept' program for a larger 'community builder' application. http://www.anenris.com/rpgs/builder/index.html There's not much too it, but the idea is the community builder would generate hundreds or thousands of people, displaying ratios, individuals, level...

    Recommend a Campaign Setting Book

Haven't read it, so I can't really comment. The setting and the rules are both pretty solid, despite my initial concerns. Rokugan/L5R is a beautifully done setting, and the only non-homebrew that has captured my interests since I started D&D with Mystara. It takes a bit for some to step out...

    Questions on medieval armies!

Fireball in battle is not the army slayer. Lengthened Lightning bolt againt the army on the march is.

What if... WotC hadn't bought TSR?

Yeah. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Largely, IIRC, it was tied up between them and their printer. WotC probably let go of a good deal of things for this reason as well. I don't think SJG or White Wolf had the money, though I suspect they could probably get it on loan. I wouldn't fault them and...

    Questions on medieval armies!

Re: Re: Questions on medieval armies! Case in point, during World War II the United States managed to feild a sixth of its total population abroad in its armed forces. In medieval times this would have been a logistic miracle (it probably would be even now). The Roman army peaked at about...

    What are your house rules?

You know, it's no big deal, and I have a nice page with my own house rules, but I guess I just don't really have the time...

Irritating Munchkin tricks your Players try to argue.

Seriously, I don't think you are winning any friends or support here. That was uncalled for.

    Character Levels

Started at 1st level in August of 2000, the month after 3e came out, in a homebrew campaign. My character is now 16th level, we fully intend to go epic :-)

IS Gary Gygax's World Builder Hardcover any good?

It gives definitions for hills, knolls, and so on... laughably silly at many points. I picked it up mainly to just have a book with this information printed and in one place. If you are strapping for cash, their are many, many better books out there.

What is the D&D of Science Fiction RPGs...

It is kind of hard to say. Traveller, Shadowrun, Star Wars, Star Trek, Mechwarrior and Warhammer are all settings, immensely popular settings, but still settings. D&D is mostly a system, though it started as a setting, sure. The only 'system' that's not overshadowed by an order of magnetude...

    Best and Worst Settings?

Best Setting: Legend of the Five Rings - the d20 conversion is Rokugan, but I still like the L5R rules better. Any setting where the reading can make you feel sorry for the Most Evil Bad Guy Out There (tm) has something going for it. "You, you made your 'empire', you knew I fell, but you did...
