I thought through these issues a lot when I designed the basic generators/lists framework for RolePlayingMaster.

Your referenced thread taled about different cultures, and I would like to build on that. Personally, I don't think the issue is that the DMG stat breakdown is necessarily wrong. My take would be that its up to the DM to decide on the particular makeup of his/her own campaign, or even a specific area of a large campaign world. If you're playing generic D20 in a modern or Sci-fi world, the DMG tables are almost completely irrelevant.

My own take is that the best universal solution is to provide flexible generators that allow you to decide what is available, and in what relative quantities (be they races, classes, weapon choices, whatever).
To really make this work, you need to provide access to a large database of all the possible RPG objects, and quick ways to build tables from those objects, copy and modify existing tables, and link between tables.

Well, the problem with the DMG breakdown is that you can't extrapolate a nation from its member communities.

In other words, I want it to be possible to get the same results by generating a community of 12,000, and twelve comminities of 1,000 (if they're close enough together... what's the difference?)
