I have to agree here. I think the general public impression of gamers and D&D is more akin to what they think of Trekkies--there just aren't as many bizarre satanist conspiracy theories anymore.

Oh, it's more than a little funny. The best part is seeing Tom Hanks as the lead (what was his name?) who ends up going insane by "losing himself" in his character. Or maybe it was the candlelight ritual D&D--sorry, M&M--sessions. Or maybe it was the caves. Sorry, there's too much in that...

Remember, though--even if they're buying the books to burn them, or to gather "research" for anti-D&D articles, they're still buying them, and that means sales.

You're right--it is. But it's also hard to find decent players. I have a lot of trouble in my area, because so many of the gamers I run into are people I would *never* want to play with (or have run a game for me). One guy--seriously--started telling me about his 40th level anti-paladin...

I'd just find another game. If that's the standard for this guy, it's not worth it. It really sucks that there seem to be so few decent gamers around with relatively problem-free games.

Funny, when you mentioned a sword named "Need," the first thing I thought of was Sigfried's song from the opera "Sigfried" -- "Notung!" And what did Sigmund say about it? "Neidliches Schwert"? Forgive me, my German is nonexistent. I'm pretty sure that was "Sword of Need," though.
