Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

When I first started playing Castles and Crusades I had a player who even though they really preferred games like Pathfinder she didn't say that she liked that the rules didn't get in the way of the story.

How many were abused due to their love of D&D, RPGs, and related items when they were young?

My dad hated D&D but not because he thought it was satanic but because I spent more time playing than studying while I was in college. He attributed RPGs to me goofing off while he supported me in community college. So I kind of got it. Seriously, I just wasn't a college person and eventually...

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

I have spent most of my gaming life defending Hero System. It's true that character creation can take a lot of time but the actual game play is usually not that bad.

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

I remember trying to make a character for Starfinder and I just had no desire to go through all of the technical work when there are systems that do Science Fiction so much easier and better IMO.

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

So, in another post I mentioned a gaming group that didn't come back to my table because I mentioned that I preferred lighter systems to crunch. In our discussion via text this came up: Less rules = less consistency. There's more opportunity for conflict arguing about how something's been...

What VTT(s) do you most dislike and why? (Defenders welcome to defend)

I really don't like Roll20 but it's about the only VTT that people want to use. I really prefer Owlbear Rodeo.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps - Official Teaser Trailer (2025)

This whole discussion reminds me of when Daniel Craig was being cast as James Bond and fans were tearing down the movie before it even came out.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps - Official Teaser Trailer (2025)

Sorry, but Doom callously murders people that simply annoy him and he rules his people with an iron fist. Make no mistake he is a tyrant.

Looking for Old School players in NE Wisconsin.

So, my wife and I have both been gaming since the 70s on and off. We have played many different games and really love just sitting around a table and playing with friends new and old. I find that I really prefer rules light games because the rules don't get in the way of the fun. We live in...

Do you gaming groups that only play on system?

I have played in games that lasted for years. Hell, I ran a Golden Age Champions game for several years. However, I did trade off GMing with other GMs. I was never in a gaming group with one forever GM.

Do you gaming groups that only play on system?

I am in a bi-weekly Pathfinder game and I think some of the people that left us are local so there is a community. However, the gaming store I play has stairs to the gaming table and my wife is confined to a wheelchair, also the area we play it is kind of cramp since the rest of the gaming area...

What are the primary reasons your players reject other systems/settings/games?

I know what you mean. I have to resist the urge to buy another game as I will just have it collecting dust in my library. However, I don't want to get rid of any games because I keep thinking, probably incorrectly, that I will play it one day.

What are the primary reasons your players reject other systems/settings/games?

Limited time and resistance to change. I have a biweekly group that plays every other Sunday from 1 to 5. They only have so much time to play and are presently playing Pathfinder 1e. I didn't suggest an Alien War/Hero System one shot to playtest for upcoming Gary Con. I got zero response on...

    Why do like Lighter Systems?

Totally agree with 3.5 D&D. It's is a crunchy system, the heaviest rule set of any edition, but its rules are exception based. This rules works unless you have this feat in which case it works this way unless the opponent has this feat which counteracts this rule and so forth.

    Why do like Lighter Systems?

So, I posted this elsewhere but I just had a gaming group break up with me and my wife because I mentioned that I generally prefer lighter systems as opposed to their heavily house ruled D&D 3.5 game that they wanted to play long term, say about 2 to 3 years of play. I never actually said I...

Shadowdark: tips for a new GM?

True, it's like DCC but much more simplified.

Shadowdark: tips for a new GM?

I prefer my magic to be unpredictable.

Shadowdark: tips for a new GM?

I think a lot of stuff in Shadowdark is designed is direct contrast to 5e and to a degree 3.5. Messing with spellcasters was a way step away from caster dominance.
