D&D General How I would have done Weapon Mastery

I really like that idea. As for Book of Nine Swords, yeah, I'd love it if high level fighters could do legendary things.

D&D General How I would have done Weapon Mastery

More like they'd be fighter class abilities, but the other warriors who don't get cantrips get Weapon Focuses. IDK, just in my Xev20 thinking again.

D&D General How I would have done Weapon Mastery

The Open Hand Monk kind of does.

    D&D 5E (2024) Thief Rogues and Items

Perhaps! Smite Spells can fill in for getting effects on attacks, and Hunters Mark could allow trading damage dice for effects too. I'm still sad they didn't go with the 1/turn scaling damage for hunters mark.

    D&D 5E (2024) PHB 2024 Armor and Weapon Table

The armor table looked the same to me.

    D&D 5E (2024) Rules that annoy you

Oooh! Maybe that's how bonus action potions work; you just crush them against your forehead like a fratbro.

    D&D 5E (2024) Rules that annoy you

I'd just say it's magic and absorbs through the skin magically.

D&D General How I would have done Weapon Mastery

"Mastery" is such a big word for 1st level characters. I would have brought back Focus, Specialization, and Mastery, and I would have left Mastery for Fighters. I'd have also liked to see masteries, however they're done, be more like Martial Cantrips, but I'm a 4venger. Each weapon or weapon...

D&D General Quick Background House Rule

The rogue was better at most skills and better at combat usually. The ranger only excelled at tracking and goblin fights. Eventually the ranger picked up Improved Disarm and kind of became the martial controller, harrying the enemy till the barbarian and rogue could get in and confirm the kill.

    D&D 5E (2024) Thief Rogues and Items

I'd actually like if Rogues didn't have weapon mastery and instead used their cunning strike only since it mimics mastery. Barbarians could be the same. Make mastery feel special.

    D&D 5E (2024) Rules that annoy you

Found another one. The summon spells wording of “30 + 10 for each Spell Level above 4th” type wording is requiring unnecessary subtraction. It should really be "X + Y for each spell level". Yes, this requires multiplication still, but the original way requires subtraction and multiplication and...

D&D 5E (2024) Learning to Love the Background System

I really miss the flavorful background benefits. I'll be porting them back in; they were really helpful when writing more open adventures.

D&D General Quick Background House Rule

I've always long been frustrated that D&D can let someone build a bad character. The first game I ran back in 3E had a ranger who went high Dex, low strength, finesse TWFing, and was absolutely terrible beside the barbarian who just pumped Str.

D&D General Quick Background House Rule

I think a lot of newer players will be served well by background packages.

D&D General Quick Background House Rule

I'm seeing lots of people have issues with the new background system, so I came up with a quick house rule. Instead of gaining +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1 to the ability scores in the background, change it to +1/+1 and add +1 to your class's primary ability. Then, all classes will be guaranteed to get a...

D&D General House Rules ideas - Ability Score vs Modifier

Armor is a broader topic. Personally, I'd love a system that models adventure movies better. Most adventurers aren't wearing armor when they're exploring, but they put on armor before a big battle. I've never been able to figure out a good solution, other than harsh max dex bonuses.

D&D General House Rules ideas - Ability Score vs Modifier

Removing proficiency is an interesting thought. As it stands, characters primary bonus goes from +5 to +11 from ability and proficiency. Going from 15 to 20 would be in the same ballpark. Could work well for a simplified system that didn't have skills. Reminds me of the old "roll under"...

D&D General House Rules ideas - Ability Score vs Modifier

Oooh. AC and HP are a difficult system to adjust. We've tried damage reduction for armor before, but adding a 3rd variable makes things really complicated. Having Armor as hit mitigation, though, could be interesting. An armor's armor bonus could be how many hits you can block before having to...

D&D General House Rules ideas - Ability Score vs Modifier

How big of a change would it be to have ability modifiers be Score-10 instead of (Score-10)/2? It would create a bigger disparity between high and low stats, but it would make sure every +1 mattered. Or, the current modifier can remain for to hit, damage, and save DCs, but skills could use the...
