D&D General How I would have done Weapon Mastery

"Mastery" is such a big word for 1st level characters. I would have brought back Focus, Specialization, and Mastery, and I would have left Mastery for Fighters.

I'd have also liked to see masteries, however they're done, be more like Martial Cantrips, but I'm a 4venger. Each weapon or weapon group could have a mastery or two, some overlapping, while other properties like heavy, reach, versatile, light, and thrown would have their own masteries. Then, each class would have a few exclusive options to round things out.

Sounds like how it is now but with more options and some scaling involved.

1st level characters aren’t straight off the farm anymore. You’re new 1st level was captain of the guard or the hero that saves Podunkville. A master of the arcane arts. Etc etc

Used to be D&D was your origin story. Now it’s just one more adventure.

Agree and this is why I still insist on 1st level.

5e versions of 3e's Weapon Focus, Weapon Specialization and Weapon Mastery feats?

I'd just let any characters do something cool if they roll high enough, narrative-depending. Having these masteries implies that non-martial characters can't topple or push or graze, because if they did, that would be watering-down the class abilities of those who can.

I'd have also liked to see masteries, however they're done, be more like Martial Cantrips, but I'm a 4venger. . .
Or like the abilities introduced back in 3e's Book of Nine Swords?

Honestly? I'm kinda fine with that. I don't like the excessive "I killed Gods before level 1" but player characters should be a cut above the normal rabble. I struggle to think of a single adventure story (be it comic, book, movie or game) where there isn't something special about the protagonist. Even the "straight off the farm" characters have a potential their other townfolk don't.
