D&D General How I would have done Weapon Mastery

I'd just let any characters do something cool if they roll high enough, narrative-depending. Having these masteries implies that non-martial characters can't topple or push or graze, because if they did, that would be watering-down the class abilities of those who can.

Or like the abilities introduced back in 3e's Book of Nine Swords?
I really like that idea.

As for Book of Nine Swords, yeah, I'd love it if high level fighters could do legendary things.

Before the playtest I was doing Focuses,

There were different types of Foci

Weapon Type: Axes, Swords, Maces Etc.
Property Type: Heavy, Light, Reach, Etc.
Damage type: Slashing Piercing Etc,
Style Type: Sword and Board, Archery, Spear and Net,Etc.
Regional Type: Northern Tundra, Inner Desert etc,

Each had a rider on attacks. Sometimes boring +X damage. Sometime auto-push or auto-prone or DOAM. Sometimes some crazy effect with a save.

Martials got 3. Fighters got 3+Prof. A Feat gave you 2.

You can only apply 1 Focus at a time until level 6. 3 at 12, 4 at 18.

Might convert some of them to Masteries once I do a whole 2024 rule campaign.

1st level characters aren’t straight off the farm anymore. You’re new 1st level was captain of the guard or the hero that saves Podunkville. A master of the arcane arts. Etc etc

Used to be D&D was your origin story. Now it’s just one more adventure.
Yeah! It wasn't like my 1st level fighter in AD&D was a veteran of some battle already... checks AD&D and OD&D level titles Er.... ;)

This is such facetious hyperbole. What are you talking about? Your opinions of power level are grossly out of touch and almost nonsensical.

Masteries should be like known maneuvers.

I.E: You know mastery Vex and Nick;

you can apply Vex to any Finesse and Ranged weapon you are proficient.
you can apply Nick to any Light weapon you are proficient.

you can apply only one Mastery per attack even if you weapon could apply for more masteries you know.

Fighter of X level(maybe 9?) can apply 2 masteries per attack.
Fighter of Y level(17?) can apply 3 masteries per attack.

It's really a question of fantasy. Is your Fighter someone who knows special techniques (Vex, Nick), or has your Fighter mastered a particular weapon (can use Short Swords to use Nick)? Both answers are valid.

ofc, both are valid.
But with known maneuvers you can cut down on amount of weapons you must carry.

I would say it’s fairly accurate when you compare. 1E and 5E 1st level characters. But yes I did add a bit of flourish. Some spice, if you will. A bit of that ol’ razzle dazzle.

Jazz hands! 👐

Yes, it's very unfortunate that PCs are no longer born in a puddle of mud and their first act of life is to avoid drowning. Eventually, after enough bodies accumulate, one doesn't automatically land face down in the mud and lives long enough to get a name.

Yeah, I guess pizazz is a lot of fun.
