D&D General Mechanic Pitch: Fatigue and Exhaustion

There are times when thinking about how to implement mechanics that I find myself thinking "gee, it would really make sense to hand out exhaustion here", but then having to go back on it because it's such a hard condition to get rid of. I do like the new exhaustion, just being stacking -1...

    D&D 5E (2024) Clerics and 2014 Domains (+)

I'd personally have a special Divine Order option at 1st level that's tied to some of the domains. That way it sort of becomes a mini-domain choice at 1st. Thaumaturge gives +1 Cantrip and add Wis to Arcana and Religion, and Protector gives Martial Weapons and Heavy Armor. So, here's my pitches...

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

A distracted creature should definitely have disadvantage on perception, including passive perception. Passive defenses are just a really good idea.

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

I'll still be using my version inspired by Pathfinder 2's stealth rules

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

I really don't like invisibility being used in this case. "Hidden" as a condition is the perfect solution. You can be invisible without being hidden, and you can be hidden without being invisible.

D&D General Payn's Ponderings: The Fighter's identity; or, what's left after the combat pillar?

Great post! I've long thought about the same thing. One thing I started leaning on in my thoughts is that the Fighter is the regular person. No, I don't mean they should only get mundane stuff, I mean that Fighters represent the every day NPC. They're the one people can see themselves in the...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Beyond Article on Crafting

Thinking on it further, here's my initial thoughts: Base crafting is DC 10 for common items, 15 uncommon, 20 rare, 25 very rare, and 30 legendary. Crafting an item requires 50% of its cost in ingredients. For every 8 hours of work, make a check with the appropriate tool; crafting is usually...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Beyond Article on Crafting

I want crafting to be a mini game. If the base is 10 gp a day of progress, then why not have it be a DC 10 check and your roll determines how much GP of progress you make in a session's work? Have it be tied to your proficiency bonus so it increases with level, or let people boost the DC to get...

D&D General What are settlements of other species like?

We all (think) we know what medieval settlements are like. But we're human. What would the settlements of the D&D PHB species be like? How would they differ? What remains the same? Aasimar: I don't think Aasimar usually have their own settlements, they seem to be born to humans. But, what if...

D&D General Lies, Darn Lies, and Statistics: Why DPR Isn't the Stat to Rule them All

DPR analysis is good for comparing similar characters, or for spot checking balance. If build A out damages build B and build B doesn't have any substantive benefits over A, then that tells you something. Rogue's have lower health and often lower HP than Fighters, but Rogues have skill...

    D&D General Neolithic D&D

I've been wanting to run an Ice Age game, and here are my character restrictions: Armor limited to Leather, Hide, and Ringmail Weapons limited to simple weapons at first; basic weapons are stone, +1 weapons are bronze It's going to be a hexcrawl, and I'm going to track spell components; no...

D&D 5E (2024) Josh Herman (Head of Art) Interview with Silver and Blue Dragon Art

I'll always prefer the Lockwood designs. It's going to take some time for me to warm up to these.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D species article

You know, removing the cultural features from the Species really makes them boring to me. I'm really glad A5E split Lineage and Culture.

    D&D General Monster Scripting

This is a really good reminder! Goal and method are separate variables. Different creatures can have the same goal, but their methods differ. A pack of wolves are gonna defend a den with their pups inside than an Ogre would defend its cave and treasure. So we could start with the 4E encounter...

    D&D 5E (2014) Feats AND Ability increases?

Either way, which feats do you think might become a problem? Lucky? The save proficiency?

D&D 5E (2024) Is anyone going to use the new 2024 backgrounds?

I'll give them a try, but I'd probably let people shift the ability scores if they really needed to.

    D&D 5E (2014) Feats AND Ability increases?

I think I'd just change the +1 ability of the feat to +2, which would thematically group feats into which ability score/s they're tied to. I like +2s far more than +1s since a +2 always provides a benefit. Taking a +1 on top of an even score feels so blah.

    D&D 5E (2014) Feats AND Ability increases?

Yeah. The math seems to really want a +1 at 4 and 8. I make a lot of custom monsters and used the DMG monster guidelines extensively, so I got very familiar with those baselines. +1 is pretty invisible, since it's the difference between a magic item or not, but when I played a Wildfire Druid...

    D&D 5E (2014) Feats AND Ability increases?

You know, turning all feats into half feats (if they aren't already) and upping the bonus to +2 would be an interesting middle ground. It's only a +2 to (effectively) +3 differential, it keeps the ASI level from being weakened, and it makes sure choices are interesting (because as much as +2 to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Feats AND Ability increases?

I really miss feats. I hardly take them since I personally value ability increases more than most feats. I'm strongly considering taking away the +1 ability score part of feats but also giving a feat progression so characters can have their ability score adjustments and get to pick feats too...
