D&D General Words which replaced "race" in fantasy games

More and more, I think I really don't like "species". Tieflings aren't a different species, they can be born from humans. Species feels too scientific. There are 4 that I like way more than species: 1) Lineage, like Level Up 2) Ancestry, because ABC is neat (Ancestry, Background, Class, and...

D&D 5E (2014) wis Warlocks and con Sorcerers

I love the notion of Con Sorcerers. As it is now, 80% of characters at my tables throughout all of 5E have had 14 Con, 15% have had 16, and 5% had 12. A Con Sorcerer would give us a class that pushed got 16>18>20 and that's neat. Plus if we have an Int Mystic, then we'd have 2 full casters for...

D&D General World Building and Magic

You know, this has me thinking about the "Saturday Morning D&D" supplement I was thinking of.

D&D 5E (2024) How many of you would implement the drop to 0 HP, get 1 level of exhaustion house rule?

If exhaustion was cured 1 level on a short rest for everyone (as it really should be, why else do we get breaks and lunches at work), I'd totally be down for frequently using exhaustion as a penalty. I'd probably want to use 10 steps before incapacitation/death, but a -5 penalty would put most...

    D&D General Monster Scripting

Hey everyone. I've long been interested in making some basic monster scripting guidelines for DMs, new and old alike, to take some brain load off of our work. My friends and I were playing one of the D&D board games, which had very basic "monsters attack the nearest target", and those rules...

D&D General World Building and Magic

Back during the original D&DNext Playtest I ran my first 5E game. In it, something one of my players said stood out to me ever since. He said: it's odd that no one bats an eye when they find out I'm a warlock, a great old one warlock to boot. I recently started thinking about it again. Has...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

Yeah. For instance, Gloom Stalkers are skilled at fighting Aberrations and the creatures of the underdark, but they're not bad at others. A Monster Slayer has features for fighting undead, werewolves, and the creatures of the night, but they're useful against everything. Giant Slayer, Dragon...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

Favored Enemy has always been the Ranger's unique thing. What if their subclasses were all designed around creature themes. Then, your favored Enemy becomes what your subclass is built around.

D&D General Religion in D&D: Your Take

My setting has an animistic spiritual system. Except for the big gods, gods of the elements or world wide features like the Sun and the Moon, gods are very local. Some gods have religions built around them, like a church that follows the teachings of their founders and keeps the founder's...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

So have we agreed on a simple revision for our purposes? I vote remove concentration from Hunter's Mark when cast by a Ranger, like War Cleric gets for sacred weapon and shield of faith. Then we just need a different level 13 ability.

D&D General Words which replaced "race" in fantasy games

I don't like the term "species" for fantasy settings (especially when a number of species have fertile offspring, like humans/elves, humans/orcs, and humans and everything else). "Peoples" is so good, I don't know why I never thought of it!

D&D General Should ranger get a companion as its 'signature' feature?

I was serious. Having the Ranger be based around an animal Companion would differentiate it's base playstyle from other similar classes. Scout Rogue and a potential Guerilla Fighter would do the nonmagical ranger stuff just fine, where as an animal Companion would make them stand out. Then...

D&D General Should ranger get a companion as its 'signature' feature?

Yes! Ranger's core feature should be an animal Companion. The nature of the companion would allow the ranger to have damage (feline) and defense (bear) options, as well as mobility (mount) or support (bird). Then, the rangers archetype can take the place of favored Enemy; bounty hunters and...

    D&D 5E (2024) So what's happening with Ranger?

Yours has the same issue as favored Enemy in 3E; it requires mother may I from the DM to make sure you get to use the ability. If it's something you can switch on a long rest, and later a short rest, that would be one thing. I'd prefer rebalancing Hunter's Mark (and Hex) to not be concentration...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

I fully expect a "woops, players, Relentless was supposed to remove concentration..." War Priests get limited concentration less shield of faith and spiritual weapon (spiritual weapon got nerfed with concentration, eh?), Rangers can have it too.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Monk"

Myrmidon was a lot of fun. I was thinking about fighting game characters a lot while making it. I'm glad you think it's not clunky, as there's so many moving parts.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Monk"

I'm with you on the Warrior of the Elements. Being able to choose 1, 2, or 4 elements would be nice and fun. Also, I hope to finish up the Expanded Elementalist soon, with 10 elements, 10 subclasses, and lots of new Adaptations. I'm glad you like it!

D&D General Build the "Definitive Pantheon"

Gods of Luck, the crossroads/travel, and time are all common. I could see those. Freedom/Chaos too.

D&D General Build the "Definitive Pantheon"

I'm sad there's only going to be 4 subclasses for Cleric and Wizard in the 2024 PHB. Since this is related to the pantheon, what other domains can you think of that feel "missing"? Arcana Domain Death Domain Forge Domain Grave Domain Knowledge Domain Life Domain Light Domain Moon Domain Nature...
