I loathe and detest many of the 1e rules. Weapons versus armor, alignment languages, broken psionics, intelligence being useless for non-magic-users, etc. However, it is a lot of fun to play and with a good DM, I'll play in a heartbeat.

My only beef with the beastmaster build is: No ape. I'm also curious as to what other classes might get companion builds. -Animals for druids and possibly barbarians. -Familiars for wizards. -Mounts for paladins. -Spirits for shamans. -Golems for divine controllers.

4e combat has more emphasis on players working together. 4e combat feels more Heroish. No more Johnny One-spell wizards who cast the same spell over and over again. Magic items feel more like magic items and less like trinkets. 3e was too Monty Haul for me, especially at high levels...

There is new stuff on WotC's site, including Vicious Venues, a Dragon article on putting artifacts and vehicles in your campaign, and a preview of Martial Power that includes the intro to the fighter chapter and the Polearm Master PP. As an aside, the new class features are alternate features...

I don't know if anybody noticed this or not, but on the Ask the Developer thread on the Forgotten Realms board, Rich Baker mentions a psionic empath. Could the empath be a psionic leader slated for PHB III?

I'd like to see feats that take advantage of a good Int or Cha, mainly for warlords, but also for other martial types who don't dump those two stats. Also, if rangers get animals, why shouldn't a warlord get a squire?

I would like to see a character in the mould of the 1e ranger, the staunch tough wilderness warrior. Str, con, and wis should be his key abilities. Perhaps he can use heavier armors. As for the name, I think warden fits.

The reason they are mentioned is so that when the PHBII comes out, players who like those races can get a quick look at how those races play out in the Realms without having to wait for a Dragon article. And yes, gnomes, goliaths, half-orcs, and shifters have all been confirmed for the PHBII...

2e was out for 11 years when 3e came out. A good many gamers were going through 2e burnout when 3e came out and were ready for a change. 4e came out 8 years after 3e. A higher number of gamers have NOT burned out on 3e. Thus they see 4e's release as premature and react accordingly.

Personally, I love backgrounds. I think they allow players to play interesting concepts that are not easy to create using just the core rules. I particularly like the ones which add skills to your class list. However, I do see powergamers going for the backgrounds which offer combat benefits...

I've been waiting for the FR books to come out before I started a campaign, so my sole playing experience is a test drive of H1. From my short experience, I find 4e no more of a boardgame than Champions, which in my experience did not hinder roleplaying at all.

I find it amusing that a game is called simulationist when you can't even use a spear one-handed. B-)

I just noticed on the Official products page that the Eberron Campaign Guide is listed for July. Also, there is a new epic adventure and a new set of Dungeon Tiles for that month also.

After finally finishing reading through the PHB, I am generally impressed with the overall quality. However, I did notice that some build options for some classes don't receive the love they need: 1) Avenging paladins. Looking at the power list, Cha-based powers are definitely favored over...

As much as I love 4e, I would have to agree with you. I would have liked to have seen magic items cut from the PHB and put in the DMG. A few classes, most notably the paladin and the warlock, could have benefitted from a few extra powers. The paladin could really use a few more strength based...
