New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

My issue is with this perceived need for modularity. Is it really necessary or beneficial to distinguish between, "I'm the FAST climber!" and "I'm the CAREFUL climber!" in a roleplaying game? I think this is taken to ridiculous extremes in many games, and in my experience in encourages a style...

With that in mind, our Flashing Blades adventurers are: Riordan O'Neill, Hiberno-French King's Musketeer and master swordsman Guillaume Sébastien, physician and polymath Bruno Faucon, assistant fencing instructor and man of mystery

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

Know what I want from a stereo? A volume control is mandatory. Bass, treble, and balance controls? Sure, okay - I'm most likely to set them once and then forget about them. Equalizer faders? No friggin' way I'm going to spend that much time, or want to spend that much time, effing around with the...

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

Acrobatics is good; Climb, Jump, Tumble, and Swim are bad. Ad hoc modifiers for trying something tricky are good; 'skill talents' that are part of a character build are bad. All in my humble opinion and as a matter of personal preference, of course.

Do grognards have to be jerks?

I'm a grognard. By the standards of John Young, anyway. Vive le mort! Vive le guerre! Vive les joueurs militaire!

is this GM bad or am i just a wuss?

Thank you for using paragraphs. Next time do you think you could also throw some more capitals in there, too? I'm not trying to criticize just to criticize - honestly, it makes it difficult for me to follow. I'm willing to put in the work for e.e. cummings, but not a forum post on ENWorld.

    PC Inheritance

I wasn't aware of the rule in BD&D, but of course our 1e AD&D characters had wills - there was a space for it right there on our goldenrod character sheets. Usually the beneficiary was a sibling or cousin, though actually seeing the wealth transferred to the heir was a matter of honor for the...

Do you GM for yourself or others?

That sounds about like my experience as well. I run what I want to run; I don't solicit ideas from players along the lines of, "Well, what would you like to play?" I pick a game and create a setting, then look for players who are interested in what I pulled together. Once the game begins, the...

Anthony Hope's Ruritania, a setting where a character with a sabre and a broom-handled Mauser would be right at home.

    Raven Crowking's Nest

I agree that names should have flavor and offer context, which is why I laughed a little harder than I might've otherwise when I misread "Bonestrippers Guild" as "Bumstrippers Guild." It conjured an image in my head, but perhaps not the one you were going for . . . :o
