Strength, virtual size categories, and house rules

I've been thinking about changing the Str -> encumbrance chart for my game, and I wanted to know what changes, if any, I should make to the virtual size categories and so forth as a result. I'm especially interested in U_K's thoughts, but everyone is welcome to post. In the current system...

    Skill ranks?

I'm trying to work out the skill ranks for various creatures in the 3.5 MM, and I wanted to see if I'm missing something here. Most errors are pretty obvious -- neglecting a synergy or speed bonus, for example. Here's one I don't understand: The avoral (3.5 MM p. 141) has Ride +8. Since it...

    It should be the Grimoire.

    Bestow Curse

The BoVD has maybe a dozen alternate curses, among which is sterility.

Should Prestige Classes be more powerful than Base Classes?

Of course, the number of prestige classes I've used (not large) already invalidates this statistic.

    Cartography Workshop

Cool. I should post one of my maps if I can dig one up. I should really make a new one in GIMP -- my last one was made with some cheapo program.

Immortals Handbook - Epic Bestiary (Epic Monster Discussion)

A point is 0-dimensional. A 1-D creature would be a line (or a portion thereof, to be pedantic). A 1-D template shouldn't prevent slashing damage, since severing the line would be very effective. I agree that a 0-D template should stop slashing and piercing damage, or at least make them very...

    Suggestion : Kill your ally.

I like the way you think.

    A different kind of healing

On a roll of 1, it converts 1 point of lethal damage to nonlethal. On a roll of 2, it heals 1 point and converts 1 point. On a higher roll, it heals at least 2 points and converts at least 1 point. It's better than cure minor wounds, to be sure.

    (Epic Prestige Class) Sorcerer-King

I'd make Tied to the Land give some kind of metamagic-like ability and increase the number of feats on the list. Depending on how powerful you make the ability (and how level-dependant) you might not need to give out more feats.

    (Epic Prestige Class) Sorcerer-King

I like the class, but to be honest, it feels pretty weak. Tied to the land is a triple whammy: not only did the character 'just' pay the entrance cost, but they lose a 7th-level spell slot and can lose Con. Further, if they care about their land, they have the potential to harm it by being...

Evil & Good PCs working together

I've done it, but there's often tension. The good and evil characters often seek the same ends, that's not a problem -- it's the means. The evil characters almost always have an 'easier' or 'faster' method to their goals, but the good characters don't want to throw their morals out the window.

    1999/2000 Eric's D&D News question

Does anyone else remember the example from one of the designers about domains, from way back on Eric's site? It was just showing the way clerics picked their domain spells, and it had amusing examples for the spells. As I recall, they were War: 1--thump; 2--great thump and Fire: 1--burn your...

The Modifier Beast [culling the herd]

(Pedant alert) Bonuses, not "boni"! I like reanjr's breakdown, although I'd be careful with untyped bonuses.

    The Le Products- Balanced?

Yes, they're pretty well balanced. That is, about as well as WotC's supplemental series -- they bring in a lot of cool material, which does up the power level a bit, but nothing earthshattering.
