D&D General GM's are you bored of your combat and is it because you made it boring?

I have spoken to a couple of my GMs lately about why the ended campaigns abruptly or early before end of the story arch. The common thread I got in their answers was basically "it got to be a grind as the party got higher levels." Then I asked, "the players didn't mind, what why was it so boring...

D&D 5E (2014) What to do about Hypnotic Pattern?

So what get you engaged into a caster or two in a fight? It seems to me Hypnotic Pattern shows up a lot when players are fighting a lot of 5ft ranged melee fighters all the time. If you can make it interesting and engaging for your to ranged, hidden, and caster enemies then you will likely not...

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

So when it doesn't matter and you can sneak around it or talk your way out of it... as I said. Or it could be the party doesn't feel like stopping in danger zones and risking their characters so that the one Player playing a battle master, monk, or warlock, having nothing to do with the GM and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

I think your right but your responding to the wrong issue. I think the complaint about Pact of the blade warlocks is actually largely about the comparison to other warlock pacts and why they choose warlock to begin with. The comparison of pact of the blades to other fighter builds is not about...

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

Your already likely pushing for max constitution to maintain concentration on spells both due to your lack of spell slots and due simply to most of the good spells on the warlock list being concentration. Your also pushing Charisma to make your spell casting functional because a low DC means...

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

I have never played in seen or heard anyone say they played a campaign where every adventuring day was was standard. "The standard adventuring day" in practice is a good target that story GMs ignore pretty much ignore entirely and tactical/realism GMs only situationally allow when it makes...

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

I double checked and you are correct about the strength requirement for Heavy Armor, but Ring Mail does not have a strength requirement or the Mithral versions of heavy armor. That makes is so it is still possible for a hexblade to drop strength and dex using this invocation.

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

I actually agree with you. I don't think Hexblade Pact of the Blades need more damage. I only think they need better #1 defense as a melee subclass build and #2 a little more of the warlock flexibility in build players expect from a warlock design being the reason they are not just playing an...

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

I have on occasion been able to pull of a hex save but you have to have a spell slot left for one thing. Then find and hit the rabbit without it running away which might be harder than it sounds in an underground fortress. On top of that you do realize your talking about spending a spell slot...

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

I forgot their is likely a fix for you on the way. Coming out in a few month's in Tasha's Caldron of everything. This does not have a strength requirement for plate armor. Hexblades don't have a strength or dex requirement for their weapons to include two handed pact weapons. So you might have...

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

I actually think a War priests, collage of swords, blade singer, and battlesmith artificers are significantly more capable. While I agree they might not be keeping up with fighter, paladin, barbarians with damage and "defense" (in quotes because barbarians don't defend the just take it and keep...

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

#1 I have rare played past level 10 and that is common based on statistics from wizards of the coast and D&D Beyond. That means no Mystic Arcanum and rarely more than 2 spell slots. #2 It may be on the "full caster" list but it has about as much magic as a barbarian with the magic initiate...

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

I don't think we take it all that seriously but we are in Okinawa Japan, the pool of players is small and rotates out frequently. Poeple are often home sick and some are young, still in there 20s. We created these measures because old friends and old players tend to have thicker skins, but new...

D&D 5E (2014) Pact of the chain - how did it work out?

I get that its not optimal. I don't mind that. I like it because its unexpected but it works well enough to meet party minimal requirements for my characters party role. It's also not level 20 build, we started at one and have made it to 5. We rarely make it past 9 or 10 before the GM pulls the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

So you don't do a session Zero with your group and you don't ask to fill a role in the party so that you don't step on others fun? I don't need my warlock to be as good as something else so much as comparing my build to other things is a form of measurement. I find tables and parties have...

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

I would agree with that if their other features held up to that standard there spell list was not based around concentration. The problem is Wizards fo the coast was afraid the short rest mechanic would make warlocks really powerful so they made them flexible but had to buy every little thing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

The Hexblade subclass sells its self as paladin melee damage gish, but it doesn't have the magic, damage, or defense at the same time that a paladin or artificer does. If your building a character thinking your going to hold the line for your party and thats what you and they expect, then you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Single class Hexblade - missing something?

I don't feel the have to optimized but I do like to be good as something. People always for get that to have a max/min character that has to be a min. On top of that I played a warlock scout instead of rogue, a cleric tank, druid crowd control, and a warlock tank.... These are not the...

D&D 5E (2014) Pact of the chain - how did it work out?

At level 20 you can "regenerate" 30 hp (5d6) 4 times with 6 left. Per long rest, but #1 its more efficient that that because you can break it down by intervals of 6. So if you only take 8 damage you can just use one to put you a -2 damage and wait for more damage later. That means you can top...

D&D 5E (2014) Pact of the chain - how did it work out?

Well the basic setup is level 3 but your limited to maximizing 4d6 at that level (assuming you have 18 Charisma)which is only 24HP. Starting at level 4 with 20 Charisma you can do 30HP in a turn. However at level 3 you likely don't even have 30HP to regenerate, so you likely just use 6HP a turn...
