    What book to buy?

GM Secrets (2nd ed) is a pretty darn good book. It's aimed, in my opinion, at beginner GMs or close to it - and I'd include myself in that category. It covers a very wide range of topics. There are some reviews of it at rpg.net, here are links. http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9344.phtml...

    UA Facing?

Is there a bonus for attacking someone from behind? Otherwise, these rules seem incredibly incomplete, to the point that I don't see a reason to use them.

    Just Read Sword of Shannara...

It could be, it's been more than 10 years since I read the book. I wasn't saying anything about Wishsong, though. I think the parallels with The Lord of the Rings are in the first book; my recollection is that the Shannara sequels are entirely separate tales, unlike The Lord of the Rings, in...

    Enterprise 02-11-04

Ah, so that was it! I couldn't make it out either. Well it was pretty dumb, but at the same time kind of fun. Definitely suggesting that the Xindi are being used, but then again that's not really a surprise to me. (The Xindi are told that the humans will destroy them, they decide to strike...

    UA "Wilderness Rogue"

    It does help - thanks!

    UA "Wilderness Rogue"

I understand that the Wilderness Rogue drops some standard rogue skills, which are replaced with more wilderness-y ones (plus having some options for ranger-like abilities). Could someone be kind enough to list what skills are dropped, and what they're replaced with?

    Rogues v. Traps

Well, a full round is only 6 seconds. So to search a 60' corridor which is 10' wide would take .1 * 12 * 2 = 2.4 minutes. However, tough traps have DCs higher than 20. So if you really want to find those, and the DM doesn't provide set up some clues about areas more likely to be trapped...

    Complete Arcane confirmed

Presumably there hasn't been any word on a "Complete Wilds" or similar book? :(

The rogue stole my paladin's pants

Well, it was a very funny story, I will say that. I'm sorry for being kind of harsh. Remember kids, it's all fun and games until someone gets roasted to a crisp by an adult red dragon. :D

Have a Character Concept i need to define with Classes

That sounds pretty cool to me. Lots of skills with the ranger, and a +1 BAB, would make it easy to get the prereqs and the "special ops" skills you're looking for. Edit: It wouldn't work so well for spellsword, which needs medium & heavy armour proficiency. Unless you plan on taking 6 levels...

My character - ranger or spell-less ranger?

Well, let me pick your brains a bit more... I decided on ranger with spells, despite my character's low Wisdom, and the loot that we got from our most recent adventure included a necklace giving +2 to Wisdom and a +1 natural armour bonus. The party cleric did really want it, but she was nice...

The rogue stole my paladin's pants

I have to say that I disagree with this sort of attitude. "It's a fantasy game, so it doesn't have to be realistic" can break my suspension of disbelief. Now, I don't want to get all rules-lawyer on you - and I'm presuming from your post that you are the GM, and I want to stress that my...

    Just Read Sword of Shannara...

I seem to recall a parallel between Gollum and Garret Jax as well - both being somewhat untrustworthy characters who guide them into(?) the Place of Evil.

    Do you read gaming fiction?

The only gaming fiction I've read and consider worthy of owning a copy is The Deed of Paksennarion - well, it's unlicensed "might as well be D&D" fiction. :) I might read more if I knew of reliably good authors, but I don't, and I don't want to waste money on something that turns out to be...

    Wis-Con: Feminist Sci Fi Convention

I don't know Arneson, but McKillip is an A+ author, in my opinion.

The rogue stole my paladin's pants

I have to say I agree here. :) Taking off a suit of full plate takes 1d4+1 minutes. If it's just the leg armour (which is far more than just greaves) it would only be a fraction of that time, maybe a quarter, but that should still give the paladin more than one chance to look, and really it's...

    Black Company fans!

I would also encourage you to keep reading, Joshua. I don't want to give things away, but there are several things about your understanding of Soulcatcher at this point which will change as you learn more. :)

    The End of Angel

I have to admit that I think this sucks. And I don't really have a clue what I will watch next season. Maybe by then I'll be able to afford some boxed sets and rewatch Farscape an episode a week or something. :)

    Looking for mystery/problem solving adventures

In that case, it's possible you'd find interesting stuff in Dynasties & Demagogues, which has some good advice on constructing politically-oriented adventures (the sample adventure in it involves PCs being appointed as a reward to run a vinyard, not in itself interesting to you, but it involves...

    Seeking a little DM advice

Shucks, I was going to suggest the "assassin/spy has a change of heart" idea. Typically when I recall this sort of thing happening in books, the change of heart happens after the spy betrays the heroes who are then captured. Then the spy learns X which causes him to change his mind - cue an...
