Tolkien's "The Hobbit" as a Bad D&D Game

Man, that's funny stuff! :D I suspect the PCs are: - Bilbo - Thorin - Balin All the other dwarves are Thorin's followers/cohorts/what-have-you. (Maybe that's what rycanada was saying.) Balin is the only one besides Thorin who is fleshed out much as a character.

    Movies screaming for sequels.

Wow, I would never have guessed any sort of connection between Buckaroo Banzai and BtiLC. I too would love a sequel to BtiLC, but it was almost 20 years ago... Kurt Russell would be a whole lot more grizzled, is all.

Vindictive, fair DMing, or is 3.5 too Lethal ??

I don't wish to add to the level of snark, but from what Sumi said, I think there were some other clues about how powerful the main wizard was that the group could have picked up on. First... a 17th level barbarian jailor? If the jailor is 17th level, what level is his master going to be...

    How does Boromir keep fighting?

By the by... I honestly do not know how one is supposed to conclude either way, since they didn't fight to the death. :) But I just wanted to point out that Boromir may have been the greatest known warror of Gondor but that does exclude the Rangers. Aragorn served under another name in Gondor...

    [Jan05] What are you reading?

I used some Christmas money to order Warfare in the Classical World by John Warry. Looks a bit introductory for me as I've read quite a bit, but it's a handsome book and I look forward to it. I'm currently re-reading Aaron Allston's Doc Sidhe, which for those who don't know it is a fun...

(Adventure) Heroes of The Vesper Peaks (Uriel judging)

Marl reassesses the situation now that Grog has charged up. Is there room for him to move to attack the monster from the side, or better yet, get past it to attack it from the rear? If so, he runs forward, throws himself into a summersault, and attacks the creature from behind with one of...

    How does Boromir keep fighting?

I'm going to go with what Ridley's Cohort said, more or less... D&D is not the One True Ruleset of realism or even of emulating fantasy. But then again, pretty much any system that has hit points and no penalties for injuries before unconsciousness/death has the same trouble here. (I'm playing...

    Science Fiction Reading Suggestions

Alison Sinclair - three books of hers: Legacies - Colonists returning to a devastated homeworld Blueheart - Political struggle about terraforming and physical (genetic) human adaptation on a waterworld Cavalcade - Humans on a 1-way space journey in an alien vessel, struggling amongst...

Looking for a Good Fantasy Book!

No, it's a separate world and a complete standalone. The problem with it is that it is out of print, but it should be easy to get from Amazon's used book listings or www.abebooks.com. I don't know if you have a public library available to you, but the BC books (I think now that Cook is done...

    Naruto D20 - Playtesting & Help Needed

I also see some irony in asking people not to redistribute work based on someone else's IP without a license. :\ However, Naruto is awfully cool, so I wish you guys luck with your project.

[Trailer] Kingdom of Heaven (Ridley Scott)

I take it you don't know the history of the Crusades, then. The objective was to take and hold Jerusalem and the "Holy Land" from the Muslims. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Crusade

(Adventure) Heroes of The Vesper Peaks (Uriel judging)

Marl moves to one side of the tunnel and tries to get a shot off with his crossbow at... whatever it is. (Heavy Crossbow +4 to hit, 1d8+0, 19-20 crit. Presumably at big penalties for firing past someone into melee :)) He'll then drop his crossbow and draw his swords.

Looking for a Good Fantasy Book!

Given the original poster's requests I'm wondering why people are recommending things like the Belgariad (the size of the books I forget, but it IS five books, and personally, not very good ones IMO.) But that is just my opinion... enough of that. Some single-volume fantasy novels I really...

Unlike something like The Wheel of Time, though, each book has a conclusion to it.

(Adventure) Heroes of The Vesper Peaks (Uriel judging)

Muttering "Zombies?!??! What next... Wraiths? Vampires?", Marl fashions a makeshift face mask by cutting off part of a sleeve and tying it behind his head with the leather tie from his belt pouch. Being unable to see in the dark, he'll follow just behind Jagos, with his crossbow ready. He...

Fantasy & SF from the UK

    - the omnibus paperback edition of Ash: a Secret History, by Mary Gentle. Available in the States, but as FOUR paperbacks. It's an excellent series, book, whatever you want to call it. :) - all of Steven Erikson's Malazan Empire books are available in the UK. Only one has been released in...

(Adventure) Heroes of The Vesper Peaks (Uriel judging)

"Oh, give Kreepo a rest, Vanadan. I don't think that wizard was here before. If he's involved with the foreman and this mess, why did he have to sneak around the mining camp?" "Breathing cloths sound like a good idea. Was that... man... back there the final result of exposure to ghoul...

    Dark Ages era Fiction?

Isn't Ivanhoe solidly medieval? Reign of Richard the Lionheart? I'd recommend K. J. Parker's trilogy Shadow, Pattern, and Memory (those are the titles of the books) although I've only read two of them. If Byzantine is good, then G. G. Kay's Sarantine Mosaic duology would also qualify...
