Re: Eye of Vecna -- not his own?? The eye of Rhynn was multifaceted, like the eye of an insect. I'm wondering if the "glitter like the eye of a feline" part of the description is consciously based on that. I think the Vecna/Kas story is a pretty obvious take-off from Moorcock's Corum and...

I am totally disappointed. This is one of the most misleading thread titles I've ever encountered. ;)

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Ah, okay. I was thinking in terms of his being champion of the balance, and at some point (so I've been told) acquiring a black sword, since those are a couple of the archetypal components of being the eternal champion. By the way, didn't you write a Moorcock pastiche at some point? I heard...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

I was kind of surprised to hear that you didn't create Vecna, considering that he's one of the most obviously Moorcock-inspired parts of early D&D. I was curious, though: what direction were you headed with the original Greyhawk? I'm assuming Gord was supposed to be an incarnation of the...

    Vecna Question

Well, the Eye of Rhynn and Hand of Kwyll came from the first three Corum books by Michael Moorcock. Vance may be a red herring, since I suspect the anagram was more for fun than anything else. Why not try asking Gygax himself about it, just in case he knows? After all, there's that handy...

    Vecna Question

Vecna and Kas both seem like very Moorcockian creations to me. Compare the eye and hand of Vecna, for instance, to the eye of Rhynn and the hand of Kwyll. Likewise, there seems to be a Sword of Kas/Stormbringer parallel. That's how it's always hit me, anyway. And, of course, "Vecna" is an...

    He's not at zulkir@wizards.com anymore?

    BoVD Thoughts

I have to agree here. I think the general public impression of gamers and D&D is more akin to what they think of Trekkies--there just aren't as many bizarre satanist conspiracy theories anymore.

    BoVD Thoughts

Oh, it's more than a little funny. The best part is seeing Tom Hanks as the lead (what was his name?) who ends up going insane by "losing himself" in his character. Or maybe it was the candlelight ritual D&D--sorry, M&M--sessions. Or maybe it was the caves. Sorry, there's too much in that...

    BoVD Thoughts

Remember, though--even if they're buying the books to burn them, or to gather "research" for anti-D&D articles, they're still buying them, and that means sales.

    BoVD Thoughts

I like the idea of game mechanics for evil acts. Besides, it's by Monte Cook, which means I'm going to buy it almost by default. I have never seen a bad product with his name on it--even the pamphlet in the "Elminster's Ecologies" box set that he did was good. I have one concern, however...

    NPC's insulting Paladin PC. Long...sorry.

You're right--it is. But it's also hard to find decent players. I have a lot of trouble in my area, because so many of the gamers I run into are people I would *never* want to play with (or have run a game for me). One guy--seriously--started telling me about his 40th level anti-paladin...

    NPC's insulting Paladin PC. Long...sorry.

I'd just find another game. If that's the standard for this guy, it's not worth it. It really sucks that there seem to be so few decent gamers around with relatively problem-free games.

This thread IS NOT about Dragon 300 etc...

I'm planning a kung-fu movie marathon for me and a friend of mine tomorrow. Does that count? I'm renting the Legend II and Storm Riders, probably, and I'll be looking for Chinese Ghost Story, Once Upon a Time in China (I and II), and anything else that strikes my fancy.

    Dragon 300 a bad idea

Incidentally, IIRC, that term's taken from a Dutch word meaning "soft feces." Definitely an appropriate term. =)

Tracy Hickman's view of the Dragon #300 sealed section

I didn't know Mr. Hickman was a mormon, but that doesn't enter into my lack of interest in him and his body of work. Frankly, I'm not surprised by his rant. After reading some of his other "opinion" material a long time ago, I figured he was a radical fundamentalist only slightly to the left...

    Coolest weapon from literature?

Re: Favorite Sword In Moorcock's Eternal Champion stories, wasn't Durendal just another aspect of the Black Sword, just as Roland was another incarnation of the Champion? I definitely remember Oliphaunt being the Grail, in any case.

    Coolest weapon from literature?

Funny, when you mentioned a sword named "Need," the first thing I thought of was Sigfried's song from the opera "Sigfried" -- "Notung!" And what did Sigmund say about it? "Neidliches Schwert"? Forgive me, my German is nonexistent. I'm pretty sure that was "Sword of Need," though.

    SpyCraft vs Wheel of Time

Just to mention--what the heck were they thinking when they packaged them in boxes? You can't inspect the figures to see how much flash is on them, or whether there are casting defects, and people who don't know any better (yes, this is true) might assume they're pre-painted. Besides, isn't a...
