    D&D Next Q&A 9 August

Ahhhhhhhhhh @ Ahnehnois -- that makes more sense. I was more annoyed at the idea of combat superiority dice in general for everyone. That said, I still don't like it; I think it should be a fighter only shtick, and promotes the "sameiness" that 4E can come off as. (I say this as an stalwart...

    D&D Next Q&A 9 August

All I hear is "I want all the toys too." Every non caster could ask why they don't get "spells", etc etc. This gives each class something UNIQUE to bring to the table, which was, ironically, a common complaint of folks who did not like 4E, that each class felt "similar". Why, oh why, all of...

D&D 5E (2014) How Can D&D Next Win You Over?

I think, unfortunately, many of us are confusing nostalgia for game mechanics. Nothing will ever take us back to the thrill of our first dungeon crawl, except, frankly, ourselves. Just my humble thoughts.

D&D 5E (2014) How Can D&D Next Win You Over?

For the record, I suspect many people will be surprised at how different the 3.5 reprints are from what the originals were. If they bothered to reprint all of the books, you'll find that even 3.5 had a fair amount of errata. Official D&D Updates D&D Next can win me over if it does the...

TSR/WotC Adventures - Are they REALLY any good? (Warning: Possible Spoilers)

    1) I think nostalgia colors a lot of it; we were far more tolerant of bad design when we were younger, cuz, frankly, we didn't know any better. 2) KotS really hurt 4E. Had they released Madness at Gardmore Abbey or even Thunderspire Labyrinth as their original adventure, the "rollplaying"...

D&D 4E Is PF combat any faster than 4e?

4E can be slower up until about 10th level in my experience. Basically, the thing that slows down combat in ALL systems are options. Player choice paralysis. Been running a 4E game for years now, and combats were kinda slow (one fight per night after an hour or so of narrative), until I made...

    Don't Add Up Damage - Use a blank d6

I'd do something simpler. When you are prepping the adventure, figure out the average damage of each monster (make sure you are using the updated monster damage). When you hit, use that damage, and roll a d6 / d8 / d10. Add or subtract (your choice) that much damage from the average. Gives...

[L&L] Balancing the Wizards in D&D

The poll was edition independent (they asked what edition you played). So they could have pulled that correlation, and Mearls went out of his way to point out that this was specifically NOT the case. Also, if you've read through the other polls, it is very obvious that the people who like 4E...

[L&L] Balancing the Wizards in D&D

I remember there being a poll about it and it was overwhelmingly in favor of at-will options, like 80/20, or even more skewed. Can't seem to find it on their blog though.

[L&L] Balancing the Wizards in D&D

Relevant info from the chat a bit ago... Comment From Andrew Can you comment on adventure pacing versus the wonder of magic? In 3e, PCs were often required to rest after the cleric/wizard were out of spells, regardless of the state of the rest of the party. In 4e, everyone can keep going...

[L&L] Balancing the Wizards in D&D

We will have to agree to disagree then. I think it's pretty immersion breaking that someone who can summon creatures from other dimensions can't figure out a way to create some kind of small magical effect repeatedly.

[L&L] Balancing the Wizards in D&D

Hope you don't play 3rd Edition, because the reserve feats let spellcasters do just that.

On 5E Skills (aka How Game System Affects Immersion)

Yes. EDIT: Based on everything I've seen with articles and such, I think what you described is how the game currently plays.

    D&D 4E The Dispensible 4E

So, thinking about this more... 1) Remove half level scaling. Actually, don't go back to the BAB either. Just make it attribute + weapon proficiency bonus. Now all of a sudden, the +1 a fighter gets every, say, 5 levels, becomes a big deal. Also, means that lower level monsters still are a...

D&D 5E (2014) Monte Cook Leaves WotC - No Longer working on D&D Next [updated]

I imagine more of it has to do with Monte wanting to work on 3rd party content for a game he is helping develop (ala 3rd Edition), and Hasbro legal said "heck no, make it first party for us." Basically, I'd look and see if something shows up on Kickstarter from him about a new game design...

    D&D 4E The Dispensible 4E

Yeah, ditto on the healing surges. I understand making resources to manage a character's daily capabilities, but you could do something as simple as making a constitution check, or reducing the maximum hit points every time a character is healed. Too blatant of a game mechanic, IMO.

D&D 5E (2014) Monte Cook Leaves WotC - No Longer working on D&D Next [updated]

He's working on Geek Seekers right now. I hope to catch some of the developers at the local bar on Wednesday night; I already was told one "story" of what happened, but I'll wait till I can hear it from some more people. I liked 3E. I think he has some fantastic ideas. I think him and Mearls...
